^ maybe the neighbors didn't think anything of carrot's barking because bill had a key and knew his way around? if i saw someone climbing in my neighbor's back window wearing a mask, that would certainly raise suspicion, but i guess just the fact that he kept coming back (like he was staying there) instead of disappearing after the first day (like he robbed the place and took off) would be enough to reassure me that he isn't up to no good. but the fact that the girls suspected something was going on and they knowingly left poor carrot alone with someone they assumed was a robber is just awful. oscar was home alone when my mom's house was robbed and i am still angry with myself that i wasn't there to protect him. the girls owed carrot that much. did stacey also have to take care of plants or anything? if carrot was the only reason i physically had to keep coming to the house, i would have grabbed him and kept him at my house until the johannsens got back, and either call the cops or watch the house from the outside only.

^That's true, though in Stoneybrook especially where most neighbors seem close, I wonder if anyone noticed that he only came late and left early. Also, I find it hard to believe that the Johannsen's didn't tell at least one neighbor they'd be gone for 2 weeks and to please keep an eye on things. I still am so glad Oscar was okay! Yes, Carrot was Stacey's only real reason for coming twice daily. She easily could have still swung by for the mail. If Jessi really knew the remote code for the answering machine, Stacey wouldn't necessarily have to go inside the house daily to check messages. Now that I think about it, as the "adult" Bill (I know he left a note) should have also left a phone message for the house-sitter as a back up. I just feel so badly for Carrot, who must have not quite felt safe in his own home for such a long time. We can hope next time the Johannsen's plan better.

Zoar I'm starting my reread ... Considering how well we made it last time, I think you should!

^I was thinking of asking you that last night! I'll dredge up my order list and lol re-arrange my shelves. Before my yard sale, I had hopes of getting rid of the bookcase most of my BSC books are on. That never happened and I ended up lazily putting the books back however. A couple weeks ago, I re-read the first 3 books. I couldn't bring myself to read #4. If you're game, I am, too. I am glad you are back, btw. I missed having a fellow Dawn/MA "fan!"

Hahah awesome! Not sure I can read one a day like last time, but I can certainly try. I must admit that I'm not looking forward to the 90 - 113 portion!

As I pm-ed you, I'm game. I really can't read one a day either (TMJ). Unless it is a Dawn book, of course, that I can skip most of! I'll start with #2 tonight and then skip #3 to #4 so maybe by the time you are on 4, we'll be caught up.

The implausibility of Bill staying at the house while Stacey was house-sitting has already been discussed to death, so I'll try to pick on something else. Was anyone else bothered that Stacey was unaware that her mother had studied abroad in France and could speak French? How could that have never come up in conversation before?

^ i agree. it felt really forced, just like they needed to add more words so they just threw it in. out of all the moms, maureen is the one i could most easily see studying abroad in france, but i don't know how stacey could have gone 13 years without realizing that her mom spoke french. my mom speaks another language and i've known that fact my entire life, but my mom actually grew up in another country so it's a little different.

Am I the only one who thinks someone staying in your house while you're away is a bit creepy? Although I would probably be okay with it if it was a close friend or relative. I've never had the experience; however, once, when a friend came to visit - she brought a random friend of hers who randomly asked to sleep in my bed. I thought it was odd, and hesitated, and declined. Looking back, it did look like I was a bad host - which I felt bad for - but I felt it was weird for someone whom I just met to sleep in my bed. Isn't that a personal thing?

^That is very creepy (and rude) Virgo, I'm sorry that happened to you. Did the random friend want to sleep in your bed as opposed to the floor or couch or just decided your bed looked comfortable? I think you were a very polite host, especially if you neither knew the random friend nor had a clue she was coming. To answer your question, I think it completely depends on the friend or relative and situation. I would not be happy (or okay) with an arrangement like in this book. Do we even know if Charlotte or her dad had ever met Bill Grauman? We know poor Carrot hadn't. I still feel so badly for him and mad at Stacey for her (IMO) negligence to his safety.

The random friend actually asked to sleep on my bed and then slept on the floor, after I declined. I didn't realize that he would sleep on the floor until I saw it. After the fact, I felt really bad about it. But who asks to sleep in someone's bed who they *just* met and *just* came into their house? I don't mind being a good host but my personal bed is kind of off limits to newcomers

To me, whether or not someone staying in my house is creepy depends on how well I know them. I've had two different co-workers (who I also consider friends) house-sit and dog-sit for me when I've been on vacation. They sleep in the spare bedroom, though, not my bedroom!

Virgo, that is WAY creepy, not to mention presumptuous. As for people staying in your house when you're away, I'm glad that not everyone thinks that's weird, because I make my living staying in people's houses while they're away. I know most of them very well at this point, but I didn't when I started.

^Hug, Starrynight and you are not "weird," Bill Grauman, on the other hand...There's a world of difference between someone deciding to crash at your house, discover you are out of the country, only to make himself at home without even trying to call first to setting up a trusted house-sitter. That was why the Bill arrangement was so creepy to me and I still wonder how he would have acted if the Johanssen's had been home. Would he have still invited himself over for the week or what? P.S. Thanks for all your posts tonight. It's nice to see some new activity.
