Yeah that part in the book was creepy, Im surprised such a PC series like the BSC would have a 19 year old be interested in a 13 year old, even though he didn't know she was 13...

I just finished re-reading this one again. I do love it. Agree about what's been said lately about Claudia/Georgio. I felt she really should have told him before she left. I thought it was kinda sweet how he included some petals from the rose garden in his letter. The scene where he first introduces himself to them is a tad disturbing, though, since he seems to take an interest in Claudia right off the bat but is all "You all must be the Menders' kids. I didn't know there were so many of you." He may not have known Lionel's age, but maybe he assumed they were sitting for him in addition to his siblings, which is funny - Georgio assumes Claudia is sixteen, but she is actually younger than Lionel...

The thing that bugged me about this book was when they found the list of "Evil Things To Do Today" - just so incredibly stupid.
Other than that it was fun. I liked the kids, especially Lionel. And I cracked up trying to imagine him saying "I told you to, didn't I?" in a Swedish accent.

The thing that bugged me about this book was when they found the list of "Evil Things To Do Today" - just so incredibly stupid. Hahaha! That's great. It is pretty strange they left that list out. But I found it even stranger that they were going to get Georgio fired for "fooling around with the sitter"! I love the part when Dawn gets trapped in the dumbwaiter. That part always terrified me. And so did Georgio. And so did Margaret Cooper, after they found out she could talk. In fact, the entire book is pretty creepy.

^ I had forgotten the dumbwaiter thing. Those sound so fun to ride on ;D Didn't one of the kids want to ride one in Haunted Mansion, too? This book always scared me, too, fluffy. Maybe I'll have to reread soon for Halloween ;D

I thought it was stupid that they wrote the list, period! If they had been really elaborate plans or something, maybe, but the list was, like: 1. Scare people 2. Start a fire etc. They couldn't remember that?!

^ The list did seem really stupid and pointless - the main thing I didn't like about the mystery in this one. It would have been okay if a 7 year old would have written it but real "criminals"

They weren't career criminals though--they were mere amateurs. good thing the BSC members are professional detectives.

This book always creeps me out too no matter how many times I read it. I did learn something from it though, I didn't even know what a dumbwaiter was until I read this book for the first time.

I remembered the dumb waiter from that show Webster- I always thought it'd be so cool to have one in the house- you'd get to ride up and down on it. I remember the dorm I stayed in the first semester of college was a converted old boarding house and had one. Though they boarded them all up (as well as the fire places because of the fire hazzard) because they thought they'd be a safety hazzard (you know, dumb drunk 18 year olds trying to play in them at 2AM that sort of thing) and I remember me and my friends were so disapointed.
I remember this was one of my favorites. For a "vacation" book it definately felt really different than all the other ones.
Though I rolled my eyes that they needed Lionel the "accent expert" to tell them that the woman's accent was Irish. Or was it Scottish or English... can't remember. Either way they're not terribly hard accents to not recognize even by just having watched a few movies.
I LOVED the whole Jill-crush-on-Dawn thing. It's so terribly realistic for girls who are nine to get those kind of crushes on a babysitter or an older (but not adult) girl and start trying to be exactly like them or whatnot.
Okay, and Georgio? Creepy. I understand mistaking a 13 year old for 16 (I've mistook 13 year old girls sometimes for being much older if they wear makeup and clothing and developed early) but even if Claud WAS 16 that whole "age doesn't matter" is soooo creepy and usually the sign of a creepy college guy who hits on a HS girl because he thinks she'll be more suseptible and easy. I remember a guy I was in class once with was 24 and going out with an 18 year old and all of us made fun of him for it. She was at least out of HS though. (He always defended it by that)
LOL, 'fooling around with the baby-sitter'....
Wasn't there also a plot about the kid's baseball team that didn't allow "summer people" to join? That's so realistic too of the animosity in tourist towns between the "townies" and the "summer people" and a nice touch.
How does a face painter make you a "teenager"? lol
I really want to get a copy of this book now. I remember loving the whole area the book took place in and that cool creepy New England feel it had to it.

^ I love the setting, too. ;D My favorite thing about this book, I think. Maybe the face painter makes you look like you're wearing makeup to make you a "teenager". ;D

^ E-book would definitely be cheaper than amazon, though I would consider this one worth the $$ as it's one of my favorite mysteries and definitely my favorite Super Mystery. ;D I just realized that this is the only Super Mystery that Dawn is in. All of the other ones have Abby. This seems a bit strange but maybe not since they were probably published later and after Dawn was permenantly back in CA.

Well, Dawn is in Christmas Chiller. She's in the chapters about the crooked gardener.
