I know we discussed this one at the old forum, but I hadn't read it then. I love this one, despite the fact that Laine features heavily and I can't stand the girl. I loved the chapters in which Stacey and Laine cut their ballroom dancing class and also when Stacey went on vacation to that remote island where she met Mara O'Connell. I think people rant about cruelty to lobsters not so much for the lobster's suffering, but because the person doesn't like watching the death. Just something about watching a living creature being boiled to death doesn't sit well.

Yeah, I guess. I'd never actually heard of the process before (another random fact from the BSC!) and can't imagine what it would look like. Laine just irritates me, I guess.

Laine is so annoying to me too. She seems to be just as bossy as Kristy and runs her clique (like Kristy) accordingly. I dunno. That's just the impression I got.

Laine seems to be worse than Kristy. At least Kristy isn't snobby as well as bossy.

Yeah, I agree. Laine is MUCH worse than Kristy. Kristy would never turn on a friend because she had diabetes.

i remember loving this book when i was little. i re read it and its ok, a little meh. and stacey isnt even blonde and looks 21 on the cover.
i liked when she was on the parade float and her memories of laine and stuff. and then laine had to turn into a b*tch. its funny but i cant even really remember what else happens except much else but the ballroom dancing and stacey and laine wanting to move in together. or maybe thats all that happened?
and i thought the part where claudia came to NY and was all depressed about whatever (their friendship maybe) was totally boring.

I agree. The Claudia part should have totally been taken out, although I have never read a book where she had been particularly interesting. I think Stacey should have narrated a book where Mara somehow visits Stonybrook. I would have liked to see her reaction to city-life. I think, after thinking about it, Mara has to be one of my favorite characters in the entire series. I just like her personality. She doesn't mince words.
Yeah, the parade float was great. I always got the feeling that Laine deep down, maybe in her unconsciousness, never really wanted to be Stacey's best friend (maybe just an acquaintance). Thus she can turn bitchy sometimes and not care that much about how Stacey's feeling. It seems the reasons that she became Stacey's best friend was because their mothers were good friends, lived near each other, and they had just always known each other for so long.

Does anyone agree that the picture of Claudia and Stacey in the final chapter is hideous? I thought these girls were supposed to be beautiful.

Also agree with Mcpon that Laine doesn't really care about Stacey. It seems that Laine only cares about Laine and about being "sophisticated and mature". |
