^ but did they not turn up because they didn't like the girl? Either way it's horrible, but in Claudia's case it was presumably because they forgot about the invitations and I simply don't believe that EVERY SINGLE CHILD would've forgotten. Unless that's what Claudia is led to believe. Maybe the kids all just couldn't stand her?

You'd think they'd go just for the ton of junk food Claudia would be sure to have, though.

I would think at that age, kids would go just to go. I can't see a six year old really refusing a party that other kids would be at. Then again, I'm far from six, so who knows.

I agree that I think the parents would have made me go. I kind of wondered if the kids didn't like Claudia and that is why they didn't go - even though she was led to believe that they just didn't remember. That is what the little girl I know was told too, but ....

I never liked Claudia and this book makes me like her even less. She either had to be just really lazy, or have a severe L.D. because I've worked with learning disabled kids who could spell better than she could, and yet her IQ is "above average", she just doesn't care? What a lazy pain in the ass. And yeah, she was just being whiny at the academy.

Me too, she was barely in the series, but still was one of my favorites. I miss Mimi

Well, doesn't Mrs Kishi say that it was probably because no one remembered to give the invitations to their parents? They handed them out at the end of the day, on the last day of school, and I got the impression some kids didn't even realise it was a birthday invitation and just thought it was another card or something.

^Yes, but don't kids generally clean out their backpacks at the end of the school year? I prefer to believe the kids just really didn't like Claud.

Hehe, fair enough. Maybe they weren't ready for her super high levels of sophistication just yet.

Okay, so now you've got me thinking...did Claud ever have other friends? When they were little, she was close with Kristy and Mary Anne, but apparently they drifted apart. She met Stacey in 7th grade...so who exactly was she friends with in between that? I know she and Stacey sat with some kids at lunch in 7th grade, but who knows if that was because of Stacey. And definitely no solid friendships. Was she ostracized for being 'different' (not the brightest color on the palette)?

She never had a best friend before Stacey (a point that's brought up several times). I think she even tells Stacey in a heart-to-heart that she never really had any close friends before Stacey, because she always felt that she was a little bit different. But from the sounds of it, even in their childhood, Mary Anne and Kristy didn't have many other friends - it was mostly those three. They were friends withthe Shillabers at the start of the series, but I always thought they were more casual friendships, the same as the ones that Claudia had with like, Austin Bentley and Emily Bernstein.

Well Kristy and Mary Anne didn't really need any other friends because they had each other. I'm sure MA was content with just having Kristy as a bff and Kristy was probably content just having MA as her personal little lap dog.

I always assumed she was friends with the people she and Stacey sat with even before Stacey came along. Dorianne Wallingford, Pete Black, Emily Bernstein, etc.

Yeah, I just realized it couldn't have been Stacey because she always complained about not having friends at the beginning. But Claudia doesn't seem especially close with them either. Oh well.
