^ That is strange. Sounds like some kind of "deformity". I think there is a thread for that. I'll bump it (if I can find it ;D) as it would be interesting to know if that is in anyone else's. Maybe Claudia tore out the page with the grade on it before her parents could see it - ha ha. ;D No, I think she was actually pleased with her grade on this for once.

Haha, I used to do that for school assignments all the time and still get good grades on them but writing is a skill of mine (I'm not bragging! it's true! EVERYONE always tells me it is! As the BSC members would say. ) and teachers in MS are often easily impressed if structure, spelling, and grammar is all there. It always was wierd the grade they got though, and even if Claud had a lot of spelling errors and grammar and stuff she probably pumped it full of artsy stuff and if I remember in school that sort of flashy stuff would blindside the teachers a lot and get you a nicer grade. But really, if the reports were as long as the book was, MAN, how could a teacher NOT be impressed by that length and level of detail and give them anything lower than an A? LOL. And, I agree Mal and Jessie got majorly shunted by not getting portrait books. I mean, I know they weren't the big marketable characters but still. I know the "reason" is because it was an 8th grade project and all but they still gave Dawn one and she didn't even go to the same school! All they had to say was that it was a school-wide assignment, like they did with "Babysitters Remember" and the whole 'What I did on my summer vacation..." assignment. (And wow, I had to agree with the BSC on that point- what a horribly BLANDE assignment to give MS kids. That's like one of those lame assignments you get in elementary school) I don't think anyone would have cared much and just been happy to have nice bio books on all the members. Heck, it woulda been fun to see Logan's and maybe Shannon's as well. But I was always fond of the Logan and Shannon books myself, I know a lot of people are iffy on them but it would have been cool to see them expanded upon. I agree with a lot of people on Abby's Book. It really helped me accept her into the BSC, and I'll admit in the chapter that dealt with her Dad dying I think I may have shed a tear or two...

My Claudia book doesn't have a grade in it either. Was it on the last page like the others?

Mine has a grade. I don't have the book with me, so I can't double check for you, but it's in there. I can't remember if it comes before or after the dedication to Mimi. Sorry for not being useful. Dawn's grade in my copy fell out. Too bad because I liked that bit where she sighs with relief so loudly that everyone laughs at her. I don't mean that in a cruel way - I just thought it was a nice little touch at the end. Hard to say which one is my favourite. I liked Dawn's, Claud's and Stacey's the best. Abby's made me cry. A lot. And Kristy's wasn't that interesting, IMO. I liked the first few chapters - up to the end of Car Man - but the rest was just so-so. I remember being mad when I read the bit about her dad, and it was pretty much just reading about the movie. The grading has always baffled me. The last time I read the Portrait Collection, I tried reading it from a teacher's POV. I honestly can't tell you how they're graded and why some did better than others - really, they're all pretty well-written for a bunch of 13 year olds, especially considering that most of them wrote them the weekend before they were due.

At last I opened it. And I couldn't help smiling.
The teacher had given me a B-. "An A+ for content and design, Claudia," she'd writeen across the top of the first page. "Very impressive. But you still need to work on organization, grammar, and spelling. Keep up the good work!"
My parents would be pleased. I was pleased, too. But as I said, the grade wasn't so important. I'd learned what I needed to know. Her spelling, grammar, and organization must have been spectacularly bad to pull her down almost two full letter grades. Although, since the first little single-paragraph Claudia handwritten excerpt from her project misspells four words and has a capitalization and two punctuation errors, I can believe it.

^She borrowed Janine's computer to type up her stuff, didn't she? She should have asked her to quickly look over her spelling. You'd think with a big project like this she'd want to be more careful...

^Especially considering the excitement she had over the computer spell check in Claudia and the Perfect Boy.

Knowing Claudia, though, I think that's pretty realistic. "Organization" is a fairly loose criticism, and I can picture Claud's actual turned-in portrait being kind of scattered and hard to follow. Some of the essays of COLLEGE students I have to read are so bad you can hardly follow them, although the content is there.

I think the grades were definitely influenced by things we didn't see like grammar since girls who were better in school (like MA) got better grades than Claudia. And we all know how Claudia spells (probably even with spell check ;D)

^ True, and we all know that spell & grammar checks aren't perfect. I can't remember which book it's in, but I can recall one time after Claud uses a word processing program, she says the computer went nuts while running spell check. It made me laugh. I can only imagine how long it takes to correct all of her spelling and grammar mistakes.

^ ;D This reminds me of a guy who works next to my dad who always has to ask dad how to spell something (and Dad isn't the best speller either ;D) to get it close enough for spell check. ;D

I love all the Portrait books, but Abby's may have been the best
