I liked reading books about disabilities when I was younger too, it taught me about certain things I may have not known otherwise.

I wonder if Ann and the ghostwriters approached disabilities in the way that they did to get kids interested and curious about others who were different in some way?

I can understand that for that time, but it seems like it's feeding into the oppression further though once you get into the rest of the story, it's not as bad.

These books were also written at a time when children with disabilities were being integrated into the main classroom setting. So I'm sure they wanted to also deepen their understanding as well.

I also agree about introducing the ideas. There were also a lot of photo-journal type books about disabilities written in the late 70s and those would have been available in the 80s.
