They did have call forwarding. Claudia mentions how she had just signed up for call forwarding and has all of the calls forwarded to the house phone so that they can meet in bathroom with the Kishi's cordless phone. Were thay so stupid that they didn't realize they could have just forwarded it to another member's house and met there?

I never thought of the call forwarding. But then we wouldn't have gotten to read about the "bathroom sitters" ;D That is one of the funniest scenes in the book, I think. ;D

the bathroom meeting was funny. steve barges in un zipped pants. then quickly zipps up. i was laughing harder than abby was in the book. funniest aspot in the whole book.
i would have liked more info on the phoytgraph and the people in it. would have helped were the story ended up. just seemed liked a really undeveloped plot there. and there was so much potential.

Hmm, I had a strong dislike for this book the first time I read it, but this time around, I actually found it intriguing. The story about Adrian Langley was sad, and eerie...this would have made an interesting Halloween-themed book. I like that it's set during Christmas, though. The lighthouse party sounded neat, and reading about Claudia and Janine temporarily sharing a room stressed me out, haha. Those two would never, ever be able to do that!

I thought the part where the BSC members were in the bathroom was funny and I liked reading about how they tried to find a place to hold their meeting. I liked Janine's portrayal since it showed a different side to her.

for me, the creepiest part of the book is when MA is recounting what her dad said to her the night of the accident. when a parent (someone you trust to always protect you) says that there are some places you should never ever go, that's sobering. richard is a lot like my dad, and i could never disobey an order like that.
on a lighter note, so people really steal instruments from the band room? the kids i went to high school had no respect for the band kids :] so i couldn't see them bothering to steal instruments. even though this book was written in the 90s, surely sms had some computer equipment, or at least gym equipment.
finally, it was really cool seeing the high school. (since when does the middle school get out earlier than the high school? it didn't when dawn was rushing over to see travis after school, but anyway.) i love how charlie's first reaction was to run over to kristy and tell her he can't drive her anywhere :]

One thing I thought was interesting about this book was the fact that the beach is mentioned. Since Stoneybrook is on the ocean, I would expect it to come up a lot more often. The only other time I remember hearing about it in a story was in Super Special #4.

I've been thinking about this book lately and think I'll reread it soon. I love the idea of a holding a party at a lighthouse.

I, too, was surprised by the fact that this book takes place in December. However, the more I think about it, the more I like that...
I enjoyed this mystery. I agree that it kind of dusted on a variety of topics, but in a way, I liked that there was a lot going on. Because tonight -- actually right now -- is the Vernal Equinox of 2010 (the moon has been the brightest in 18 years), I liked reading about the comet sub-plot.
I think Lerangis might have made Janine the girl with two potential lovers to show girls like her, who might read the series, that they can be seen as attractive and worthy in a boy's eyes. This wasn't the first time Janine was put in that light (think: The Mystery at Claudia's House).
Fan of the cover of this one, too! (although, Claud, aren't you a bit cold for December wearing that?)

I am re-reading and so far it seems the great switch is on having Janine act boy-crazy and Claudia (visibly) jealous of her older sister. So far this along with Mrs. Kishi almost discovering Claud's candy seem to show the start of "what could have been." I felt that way about the previous book--MA and the Little Princess, too with MA/Sharon, the kids' football team, etc, some of these later books as badly written as they can be, have some great ideas that if (only) carried through would have been so interesting.

I thought the Claudia/Janine love triangle was interesting considering reading the summer before and what happened there. Now Janine gets the guy and he's a creep. I guess Janine hasn't learned yet the grass isn't always greener!
I got aggravated how this "gang" showed up right at the end. How about some stories of a seedy underbelly of stoneybrook with the gargoyle gang and Charlie and Sam peer pressured into joining! Sorry I think I am loosing it from reading these later books and just wanting some excitement!

^I hear you on the awfulness of the later books. It really did seem far-fetched that the Patrick Belknap showed up at the end and confessed. I wonder if the others involved were ever (then) looked for by the police or if Mr. Langley "hugged Pat and made up, forgetting the whole thing."
