I know this has been discussed in other threads, but not all in one. How young does Mal seem in the early books? Appropriately young! For instance:
I heard a clatter of footsteps in the kitchen and Mallory called down, "Hi, Dawn. What's eight times seven?" "Hi, Mal," I called back. "You know that one." "Fifty-six?" she asked. "Right!" I said. "Thanks!"
They were just finishing when I heard Mallory in the kitchen again. "Homework's done," she announced. "Can I have a snack, Dawn?"
From Dawn and the Impossible Three.
I know she was only ten here, but what a difference a year makes!

Did Dawn not know the answer? Mal did seem young. Dawn thought she was stealing a toddler's brownie, for goodness sake. The first time she was the Pike's second sitter pre-BSC didn't she pounce on the other sitter like an eager puppy?

^I do remember Mrs. Pike telling Dawn and possibly at another time, Mary Anne, how excited Mal was at being an official co-sitter. I really do still wish we had gotten to read more about Mal as a charge and that Jessi had at least waited a year to come. (We had 13 years of BSC 8th grade. Jessi could have moved in year 2 or 3). I say that because maybe if Jessi had come later, Mal might have had a little better luck and/or developed stories. Back to this. I do agree Mal sounded more like 7 or 8 than 10. I also still feel that in KGI David Michael sounded much younger than 6 but in TSB, he came across as older--more to 6 or 7.

Another "young Mallory moment" I thought of was BSC letting Mal be their helper at the play group in #7. She was so proud of how she taught the kids to cross the street properly on the way to the play group, and couldn't wait to tell the BSC all about it.

^I loved that scene, Candykane. Mal seemed to do more at the play group then the older sitters who seemed to to spend way too much time in a huddle over their Jenny "problem."

I liked Mal as a sitting charge. She seemed like a goofy, awkward, normal kid.

Mallory, sounded like she's little kid at 10. When she turn 11. Sounds like, she's young adult.

I think my favorite "young Mal" moment is in #5 when she keeps Dawn from giving Marnie the brownie and Dawn scolds her saying that she'll get one in a minute (paraphrasing.) Poor Mal is like wtf she's allergic you dolt.

LOL!!! I loved that too and the drama of Dawn being pissed at Mrs. Barrett for that. I'm not going to lie when I say I loved her calling her out for it.

I know she was only ten here, but what a difference a year makes! To be honest, even though Mallory is one of my favorite characters, I really like her more of a charge rather than a sitter. She was pretty cute as a ten year old. I think Mal seemed a bit younger than ten, more like eight or nine. My favorite young Mallory moments include #4: Mary Anne Saved the Day when Mallory, her siblings, Mary Anne, and Kristy were playing telephone and Mallory said to Mary Anne,"Sit down.", #5: Dawn and the Impossible Three when Mallory was accused of stealing Marnie's brownie, #7: Claudia and Mean Janine when Mallory was the helper of the play group and she taught the kids how to cross the street safely and she was so proud of herself, and #9: The Ghost at Dawn's House when Mallory got to be the second babysitter and she was so excited to be a babysitter instead of a baby-sittee. I wish that we could read more of Mallory as a charge instead of a sitter but I do like Mallory as a sitter even though she acts like a mini adult.

I love Mallory as ten years old. She acted her age. I loved it when she gave one of her brothers the Bizzer Sign in The Impossible Three. At age 11, she would've talked to them patiently and gently coax them to apologize or whatever. You know, act more like a mother than a sister. Also, in Mean Janine, she was so proud of teaching the kids how to cross the street. And in Ghost at Dawn's House, she was so excited that she finally got to be the second sitter. I'll say till about The Trouble with Twins is when she starts being a "mini-adult"...
I do wish that Mallory had been ten for a few extra books, and that Jessi wouldn't come along till maybe when MA and Logan gets back together? The 40s to 50s?

I do wish that Mallory had been ten for a few extra books, and that Jessi wouldn't come along till maybe when MA and Logan gets back together? The 40s to 50s? She also acts her age in Super Special #1 Baby-Sitters Aboard (where she newly turned 11) when she and the triplets are treated more "equally"- all 4 of them are given some freedom to roam and explore the Cruise Ship on their own (would have been acceptable IRL in 1988 when the book came out) and she is all thrilled about the new freedom. She gets to "supervise" 9 year old Vanessa (who'd be unlikely to give her any trouble) on the tranquil sundeck while the both read and relax on lawn chairs. I also like her obsession with being "Harriet the Spy" and walking around and writing everything with the notebook; seems very naive and innocent and typical of that 'tween stage' rather than being a wise know-it-all. If Baby-Sitters Aboard had been written later on (when Mallory is only maybe a few months older but has been a BSC member for at least 5 books), she would have probably been depicted taking on full responsibility of taking care of 2 or 3 young children (all by herself!) at Disney World and of course, she wouldn't have lost anyone and handled the hungry, tired, cranky kids in the crazy crowds and long lines better than their own parents would. BTW- What's the Bizzer Sign? I have no recollection of it. Is it something only mentioned in book #5? Edit- never mind; just googled it and it sounds like the Pike's one way of "flipping someone off." Does it get mentioned in any of the later books? I just re-read #1-4 and some of the later books and Super Specials and don't see it mentioned at all.
