Sometimes I resent when they defend Claudia's poor spelling. If this is a poster for the whole school than they should have helped Claudia with spelling. And Claudia knows she can't spell. There would have been no shame in her asking Stacey or even Janine for spelling help before she made the posters. If Claudia ever becomes a professional artist and makes a real advertisement for something other than school dance then yes spelling will count.

Is this anyone else's first book they reread when it turns October/Halloween approaches? It is for me. Then I read Karen's Ghost

^ I actually think of Karen's Ghost before this one. But I do think of them both. Karen's Ghost is more "Halloween-y" to me, if that makes sense.
'Tis the season for Stacey and the Haunted Masquerade ... fa la la la la, la la la la!
So I pulled out this book the other day before bed and only planned on reading a few chapters (but ended up beasting through it!) Some things I still love, like the purple and red colour palette that Stacey offers up to the decorations committee. I also like Stacey and Mary Anne on the cover. Stacey looks especially good.
One thing that I would have liked is to actually read about what happened at the dance after crazy Liz showed herself. We get to join in on the AFTERTHOUGHT at the BSC meeting, kind of seeing it through Shannon's eyes. Why didn't they continue it at the dance? Did Scholastic think it would be too scary or something? I kind of felt like they touched on Liz's craziness and then kind of brushed it off as "oh that crazy Liz!" which is something I had a tiny bit of problem with.
Overall, one of the best mysteries. I love the scene where Stacey is in her classroom in the beginning and I liked the introduction of Cary and the MKs, especially since this book alludes to more MK work - and Cary is in a lot of the mystery books after this.

^I feel like many Halloween/Horror stories do that. It all builds up to a bunch of excitement, and then we get some lame explanation at the end that offers little satisfaction after the whole experience.
I like reading this one around Halloween time too. I wonder if the writers had any real ideas for Cary Retlin’s future in mind because it sounded like the ghostwriter sort of acknowledged the trend of characters disappearing after one book. At the end one of the sitters said something along the sentiments of “I hope Cary Retlin doesn’t move anytime soon... just imagine all the plot lines the Mischief Knights can create…” In any case I’m glad Cary stuck around.

^ Yeah, I always thought they put that in to foreshadow the fact that he *would* be sticking around.

I wonder if a Mischief Knights/Cary spinoff would have worked?

^I would have absolutely loved a spinoff! This is one of my favorite BSC books of all time and I really liked the Mischeif Knights aspect of it!

^ Good points. If Claud's art and decorating skills are really THAT good, it would have been totally reasonable for them to pair her with someone who was great at spelling/grammar and have them work together to make things. Even so, time after time (particularly when it's just the BSC), Claud gets the job all to herself. You'd think she'd get sick of having her work corrected, or embarrassed at constantly being wrong and would take herself off of that part of their projects! ^ Maybe they go to her so often to purposefully get back works that are misspelled? I mean, the promise of possibly seeing something unintentionally funny has the power to attract people? And they could use that as an extra marketing ploy? And the BSC uses it in order to give their events that extra amusement factor?

^I think Kristy cares too much about professionalism to want to appear anything less than that to their "public," and Mary Anne is probably too sensitive to make fun of Claud like that.

Read this tonight, nothing new to say I guess...I still can't believe Alan is sitting at their lunch table in one scene.

Actually, this one almost never comes to mind when I'm thinking of Halloween books. Phantom Phone Calls and Bad Luck Mystery tend to be at the top of my list at this time of year!
