I actually found this one to be a little disturbing...more so than the other mysteries, which were not my favorite aspect of the series. I also find it disturbing that Sgt. Johnson actually takes a bunch of 13 year olds seriously when it comes to solving real crimes, but I'm sure that's been mentioned in other mystery book threads.

I've never read this. Sgt. Jonny and the police in stoneybrook incompetence at solving mysteries is nothing new.
I reckon they should just get rid of the entire police force. And just stick the BSC in charge. . Didn't Dawn solve a case longtime before the pigtails.
Stacey solve 2 mysteries before the police did. Claudia Solved that bank robbery- which why didn't they get a reward for this btw? Speaking of 'clue in the photo' How was is it they could hold someone despite having carried out a search of the mans home, desk..etc. They had no evidence against him. Until the photo's arrived.
Doesn't banks usually have cctv? So they should have spotted the fake watch.
Anyway, Is this one where they meet a geezer named Golem-Or something like that? Or is Golem in 'christmas chiller'.

No, I'm pretty sure Golem is in this one. He was a little freaky....you should read this one.

After everything they've been through in the previous 39 mysteries they realize with this one that mystery solving might be dangerous!? It took them that long to figure it out? That being said though, I did like the extra danger in this one.

^ I've always thought that too. It seemed like they just wanted to end the mystery series and didn't really make much sense. It seemed like such an abrupt and contrived ending to me. I did like the extra danger in this one too but didn't like the total lack of parental involvement.

Well, what year was this published in? And Stonybrook's a pretty small town, (though a lot of crime DOES seem to happen there. Burgelers, bank thieves, sabotage, stalkers... I can't beleive the parents let them out of the house in a neighborhood like that!) but I've worked at plenty of stores with cameras and most never keep the tapes long, or one store I worked at never even recorded- just kept them up for appearances. And usually no one ever reviewed them. Though a bank may be different.
As for the cat burglar- geez Kristy get some cojones! You were in worse danger in the Super Mysteries than this! Uh... remember the guy who was trying to kill you because you put his dad away??? (And then wagged his finger and said "I woulda gotton away with it too if it weren' for you darn babysitters!" All Scooby Doo style)
Yeah, it was TOTALLY tacked on. Like someone told the writer as they were finishing the manuscript they were cancelling the mystery series- tie it up.

Golem was definitely freaky. For some reason, every time I read this, I picture him looking like Gomez Addams. I dunno. :-)
As for the Cat Burglar situation, they've had more life-threatening situations. At least Golem wasn't going to kill them; he just said he'd tie them up. What about that mess at Shadow Lake, with Woody? I love the mysteries, but goodness, it's a wonder all of those girls weren't in therapy. I would've been.

^ Well, Mary Anne did seem to have Dr. Reese on speed dial...
Seriously, though, those girls did find themselves in an awful lot of dangerous situations. What about in the mystery train book, where Kristy was running away from the guy who was trying to grab her? That was pretty scary and dangerous as well.

I do remember Mystery Train being scary but don't remember details. Was it another situation where the girls failed to tell anyone about possible danger when they should have? That tended to bother me but this book was the worst. The ending was pretty exciting, though.

I was very scared when Kristy was trapped in the locked smoky compartment in Mystery Train and later when it sounded like some maniac was running after her and Daniel. Ann sure loved the name Daniel, along with Elizabeth and John. Cat Burglar, though, won the prize for most freaky mystery and a time where there was no excuse for not clue-ing in the parents. Also, I could see K and Abby go to Golem's at the end but wouldn't MA have better sense? I guess not! One humurous thing in this book, I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, was when Sgt. Johnson calls K's house at the end she answers the phone "Hello, BSC!"

Yeah and Ann sure loved the name Shannon as well. I thought this book was okay. Yeah, it was about time they started filling there parents in on what was happening.

When I first saw this book I thought it had something do with stealing cats. You know how Dawn and the Disappearing Dogs was about a dog-napper? If you suspect that, you will be disappointed, considering the fact that cats are not mentioned in this book (except for the cat stencil outlined on the mailbox and the theory that it was the Cat Burglar).
Lame story. Feel like I have seen it before: guy fakes own robbery to cash in on insurance money. Isn't insurance money mentioned a lot in the BSC mysteries?
For a minute I was suspicious of Sgt. Winters and Officer Hopkins... so at least the ghostwriter got me with that one.
Should have made Sgt. Johnson the bad guy in the end. Would have tripped everyone out! Would have been a much better finale in the BSC mystery series.

Just read this for the first time. I thought it would be Golem. Honestly, I didn't think this one was more serious than any of the other ones? I did love all the Cary and Mary Anne bits though!

I agree with you kylie...it didn't seem all that more serious than the others. I did enjoy this one though. It is always so weird how the mysteries always find the girls. I mean...if I went looking for a mystery odds are I wouldn't find one other than where something disappeared to. But nope, there seems to be a lot more crime in little Stoneybrook than in my small city. Or well, maybe I am just older and more mature so I don't go sticking my nose into things.
