I really liked this one and really wasn't expecting to! I don't know if I'd ever read it before or not. I loved the plot of Wil and Sophie or whatever her name was (I think it was Sophie?) and them solving that mystery. It was cute, but then the lady admitting she just took off and left her dad and fiance brokenhearted and wondering was kinda messed up. I mean Wil seems to have spent his entire life missing the woman and she's just chillin in Stoneybrook at her sewing store. Definitely kinda weird having a book where charlie is doing more than carting Kristy back and forth to BSC meetings!

I really liked this one too. I like getting to know other characters like Charlie that are usually just mentioned in passing. Plus, as a kid I thought it was so exciting that they got to have an unexpected sleepover in a mansion.

I never liked this one. I found the Kru/ashers really boring in general. When did they turn into the Krashers, anyway?

I've always liked this one. The descriptions of the mansion, that it was a dark and stormy night, hehe. I like that Claudia's tie-dyed T-shirt ran and smeared all over her when she walked to her sitting job in the rain. Only part I didn't like was Dorothy saying she might give Will a visit after talking with the BSC. "It might give old Will a turn" - WTF? Yeah, probably. Because he's not aware that you were, you know, alive all this time.

I hate this book. I don't remember anything about it, except the god awful ending. WTF was wrong with Dorothy? Her fiance wasted his entire freaking life pining for her and she's just like, "Haha, maybe I'll go say hi!" I hope that when she shows up, he snaps and kills her.

I liked this book, but not the mystery part. That (dorothy? sophie?) woman was just so... I don't know, the BSC seemed to think it was all solved, but I was like WTF??? How could she?? But I liked the mansion in general, and the fact that Bart and Kristy were both there - I'm a real sucker for Bart/Kristy scenes

^ I wished they would have talked about the kids on Bart's team more. I know they did a little but not enough in my opinion, since this was a good opportunity to do so.

I loved this one! Besides Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic, this is one of my favorite Mysteries, if not one of my favorite BSC books. I loved the mystery and the fact that she'd just decided to run off and wasn't like...dead. But now that you guys mention it, it IS pretty messed up that she did that and just laughed it up like "ha, maybe I'll go visit wil...that would probably surprise him". DUH? Was she flippin crazy? Who lets their father and fiance think they're dead for like 70 years while chilling in a sewing store?

I really liked most of this because I think it would be awesome to stay overnight in an old mansion and find all that old stuff that belonged to it's long ago owners. Wasn't it cute when Bart said one of his favorite things to do is be with Kristy? However, I totally agree about the bad ending. You guys have mentioned before that sometimes the BSC books go overboard with the feminism and I think this book is an example of that. So this woman plans to run away to marry the man she loves, almost drowns and decides that she wants to be independant? That's understandable but to let your fiancee think you're dead just so you won't have to marry him and be tied down seems cruel. Maybe it's a reflection of the time but Will seemed reasonable. What do you think of that?

Oh it's definitely cruel to make your fiance think you're dead. The type of thing you'd find in a really stupid comedy. This is why I try to forget certain "mystery" parts of the bsc mysteries.

I totally agree with everyone about Dorothy. I thought it was sad that Will never left the house because he loved her so much... And she didn't seem to care about him as much, since as so many people have already said, she's just been chilling at her sewing store. Ugh. Loved the Bart/Kristy in this

Yeah, Will's whole life basically when down the tubes when Dorothy (why did I think she was Sophie?) disappeared and then the lady is just like "oh! hee! I'll call him!" Umm... okay? If I was him I'd be like WTF?!!!!!!!!!! and not in a good way.

Maybe that's why it wasn't there, because it would have been a few notches above G-rated.

I have been “saving” this one to reread when I need something to help my mood and a few days ago, I had to break down and read it. Glad I did as I loved it just as much as ever. This is probably my favorite mystery, partly because it’s one of the first ones I ever read. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of staying in a haunted house and this book gives me such a “cozy” feeling. I really like Charlie in it. This was the book that really got me liking the Thomas-Brewer family, especially Karen. I think (sorry, Karen-haters that she is really cute in this one how she helps “solve” the mystery and how she is so interested in Dorothy. I know the book is a bit unrealistic but it still has a nice ending, just what I needed on a bad day
