^I agree. I think the Kishi parents really showed the above after Mimi had her stroke. They "never thought" to ask her to help "Mimi-sit" or take on more family responsibilities. I know Claudia and Janine had a talk at the end where Claudia suggested if Janine couldn't talk to their parents and Mimi about how she (J) feels left out then she should show them," but I don't think Janine ever did or we ever saw her do so anyway.
Maybe Claudia figured it was more likely Janine got in trouble trying to "fit in" at school or something than have a boyfriend? IDK. I was always disappointed there wasn't a real mystery especially since this was one of the early ones.

^ that's actually a reason i like this mystery so much. as the mystery series went on the stories got more unrealistic. my sister definitely seems like a mystery to me sometimes, but i don't usually stumble onto bank robberies and cat burglars.

ITA. I didn't mean "more of a mystery" as in nabbing burglars or putting their own safety in jeopardy in order to "follow a clue." I didn't like the later mysteries at all for that very reason. Crazy Stoneybrook Police Department. What I meant was I was disappointed that Claudia's family wasn't more involved in the mystery. I don't mean anything awful, just maybe like a local phantom caller, odd neighbors, or even a Janine storyline better written.
Edited to ad on my drive to the dentist earlier, I had the though that this "mystery" could have also been the book about Claudia's adoption or some family past.

^That could have even qualified as a "Super Mystery." Maybe Janine gets fed up with being cast aside by her family, meets Jerry and the two of them hatch big plans. Somehow the Kishis have a fight and boom, Janine takes off. Or Janine finally realizes she should have graduated (probably) from college by now yet her parents prefer her to finish HS, so she and Jerry take off for CA. You know in Dawn's CA "how laid back all CA's are." No one could possibly have issue with two minors on the lam. In any case, that'd make a great fanfic, Wiggirl, I'd sure read it.

This is a book that I never read as a kid but which I already knew the plot of, since Janine and Jerry have been discussed so many times on the boards. It makes me wish I could have read it without any prior knowledge, because I enjoyed this one a lot, and it would have been fun to read it without knowing the full story! I actually think the writer (Ellen Miles) did a good job of sounding like a 13-year-old, unlike most of the other BSC books. Like, Stacey didn't freak out when she learned that Derek, the Pike triplets, Becca and Charlotte were practicing kissing, whereas I think if that had appeared in another book, the BSC would have been very alarmed! And silly though it was, I enjoyed it when Claudia and Mary Anne tailed Janine together. My only complaint about the writing was that Claudia sounded a little too wise-beyond-her-years at certain parts. She muses a lot about how she's accepted the fact that she's the bad sister and Janine is the good sister, and how she's also aware that despite this, her parents value her art skills as much as they value Janine's intellect, etc. It was kinda interesting, but a little too OOC for Claudia to be so insightful. I'm more used to low-esteem-Claudia who has insecurities brewing beneath the surface, not one who is aware that her parents love and respect her as much as they do Janine. This is a really weird coincidence in a book that deals so much with kissing, but I swear I'm not making this up, in the back of my copy where they list some of the other BSC books with a brief plot synopsis, Kristy and the Snobs is misspelled as Kristy and the Snogs. (I would love to read that book )

Wow, I don't know how I missed that plot, it sounds rebellious and great! Or Janine could have pulled a Ferris Bueller and taken off in Jerry's car to NYC with Claudia and company following them somehow....in Charlie's car maybe!
We should be full time fan fic writers!
Oh and I thought someone like Claudia would be blunt about Jerry to Janine's face instead of ratting on her too, so I was surprised that didn't happen either, or Janine didn't feel close enough to at least confide in Claudia considering that she went to her for a makeover and it was soooo obvious

I thought that could be an interesting (but possibly gross) book, but it seemed kind of off-topic to mention it. Fortunately, I just read the last few posts in this thread and it actually seems to fit in quite well with talk of the mispelling!

I still really like this one. I love the scene where Janine asks Claudia for fashion advice and makeup tips. I find it weird though that she didn't just tell her parents she was going on a date or whatever. Did she think they wanted we to just date her homework forever?

Claudia angered me this time around. On pages 74-75 is when Claud first decides to "put a tail" on Janine. Claudia does this mainly out of frustration with Janine for not spilling the beans with whatever is going on. I can understand Claudia, especially at 13 with a sister who generally is predictable being curious. I just don't think it was right for her to start gossiping on the phone with the BSC followed by involving Derek and Todd in the spying.
On the subplot, I was very taken aback by how OOC Charlotte was! I know she was more outgoing at this time but to be willing to "demonstrate kissing," in front of 5 boys (while kissing the 6th) and Becca? I could maybe see Char and Derek sneaking a quick kiss alone (Char had a crush on him and maybe he came to like her and they share a very innocent kiss) but not in front of an audience like that, just just seemed wrong and way off to me.

^ I think you're right on the money with that. I don't know any 8 year olds who'd be that into the idea of kissing, never mind in front of an audience. That goes double for a relatively shy kid like Charlotte.
