i really love cary, so i was happy he was the good guy in this book. it's too bad the girls never give him a chance though.
i know the names are spelled different, but i always imagined that golem from this book looked like gollum from LOTR, but wearing a smoking jacket.

One thing that bothered me in this book was when Mallory talks about how The Cat Burglar struck a rich neighbourhood in Central Park West in New York. Then, the BSC members explain how Reinhart had an apartment in the same area. Okay.
THEN when Kristy is given Reinhart's business card she exclaims how he lived in the same building as the apartment that was broken into by the Cat Burglar.
My question is - HOW WOULD THEY KNOW THIS? There are sooooo many apartments in New York. How would they know the specific address?

^hahaha I too pictured gollum - "my precious...."
Ugh - I like the mysteries but this one not so much. I realize they had to have a big case to end the mysteries on so we could see they were in real danger but come one. Gollum was weird and no other person in the mysteries told the girls how great they were so they should have figured out he was playing them. I could see the end from a mile away.
I think I may be in the minority, but I like Cary.

I don't like Cary (did in this one) but might just have lost all respect for the Stoneybrook Police and especially Sgt. Johnson. I'm re-reading and first of all was wondering about a possible mistake at the beginning. The book probably takes place right around now, in late August. Would it really be that dark in CT, though I realize Golem's house was in a wooded and secluded area, around 6-7pm? The "mistake." Kristy tells us they have plenty of time before dinner to play hide and seek. Later she tells Sgt. Johnson, that she first saw him around 7pm. Unless the TB's suddenly eat dinner after 8pm...I think she meant 6. But that really doesn't matter. What does is why wouldn't Sgt. Johnson escort the TB kids inside after dropping them off? Okay, pretend no adult, not even Nannie was home. He should have called later that evening to make sure DM, Karen, and even Kristy were okay. I guess that is "nothing" compared to both he and Winters interrogating K without a parent. I know he claimed it was informal. But even Cary had his dad present. All that takes a huge back seat to when the police bust in a BSC meeting at Claud's. Talk about unprofessional! Not that Sgt. J had any business being there either but still. Like I said, all parties involved, including the BSC members, should have acted in a much different manner.

^ that's really sad to think about him dropping the kids off in the driveway and leaving. i have always considered sgt johnson a friend to the bsc, but ANY adult should know better, especially a public servant like a police officer who has sworn to protect his community.

^ I never thought about that until this re-read. I always liked Sgt. Johnson and also thought of him as a good guy, friend to the BSC. This book even hints at a possible stronger bond between him and Kristy. I know that was never discussed in the series. I do admit, especially with this book, I wish it had been. I could see a younger Kristy somehow (maybe Sgt. J could have coached one of her brothers' baseball teams or something) looking to Sgt. J as a father figure or even "like a father." This book was just plain creepy on all accounts. I wonder if Ann really ever read the manuscript?

Haha! Oh my goodness - I thought I was the only one...on both aspects - but especially Golem and Gollum! I loved this one! I don't think it is a secret that I like most of the books Cary is in, but I agree with oldhickory - none of the girls seemed to give him a chance. Not until FF anyway, when he seemed to hang out with them off and on. I also love the tidbit with Mary Anne at the end, rushing to him and touching his forehead....awww... For some reason when I read this book, in all the scenes where MA and Cary are in them, I see two teenagers giving each other little secret gazes here and there, and if they catch each other doing it, looking away real fast. I don't care if MA was with Logan, I still imagine it this way. Definitely one of the creepier of the mysteries - and it seems like they really put themselves in danger with this one. Good thing they had good timing, or they'd have nothing.

This was certainly odd. I never would have known there were supposedly woods near Watson's house!

^That IS odd! I wouldn't have thought so either. At Miller's Park maybe - which kind of seems to change location depending on which book you are reading. But yeah, near Watson's? I dunno.

I almost snorted out loud at this part on page 88. Reinhart Golem invites Kristy and a friend to Chez Maurice to discuss the case over brunch, but Kristy says:
Yeah, your parents would have a problem with you meeting an adult stranger in a public place, but apparently they're ok with you going unaccompanied to his secluded house in the middle of the woods by yourselves. Sounds legit.

Sounds legit. Maybe it would just be harder for them to find out they went to his house? The girls (and Cary, I guess) were kind of naive to think going over to Golem's was a good idea at any time! They didn't know for sure. But, hey, at least they never went alone. Sent from my SM-G900P using proboards
