Just read it, and it was okay. About a quarter a way through it, I realized how it was going to end -- with us being introduced to Jerry Michaels. Although, this book gave me the idea that it would be cool if the timelines for plots from different books overlapped, and was acknowledged in the books. In their club meetings, they are always talking about the newest developments in the most recent plotline or in the subplot. I thought that it would have been cool if, during a meeting in this book, MA all of a sudden chimed in and said, "That's it! I think I have a good plan in how to catch the firestarter at the library."
The Derek Masters subplot was really cute. It was so adorable to see Derek pretending to pounce on Vanessa to kiss her. And then Derek breaking down, I would have wanted to hug him also, aww.

I loved when books refered to each other, but two things were never happening at the same time. Boo-hoo. Anyway, I thought this book was a little boring and predictable. Too much spying, too!! Stop with the spying plots already. Also, 'He didn't like me because of my looks, he liked me in spite of my looks!' hello, how can you be happy about that? In my world, that's an insult. As for the subplot... well, I'm not really a big fan of Derek Masters... but I felt for the kid

^ITA. Janine is like, acknowledging that Jerry thinks she's ugly!

That reminds me of this boy who thought he was complimenting me by saying that I was "much nicer than my best friend and ALMOST as pretty". My response was "jerk"!

I had a guy say something similar to me once. I didn't speak to him much after that.

Janine was so endearing with her attempts at makeup and fashion in this book. Claudia was so rude, critisizing her (even silently) ALL the time. And I agree about Jerry's comments about her looks. I would cry if my boyfriend said that to me!

I LOVE the makeover that Claudia gives Janine. That's one of the most fun moments in a BSC book, I think.

I thought the whole I like you in spite of your looks was him saying he didn't like it that she plastered herself in make up (Janine did say that Jerry hated the blue eyeshadow that she kept wearing). But if that wasn't what he meant, then that was a pretty insulting comment. Something bothers me about Derek. I do feel sorry for him in this book and he's a cute kid sometimes... but the whole "I'm just a normal kid..." thing can get a bit annoying. And the fact that the BSC go to an 8 year old kid for advice on what Claudia's 16 year old sister is up to

Derek Masters is annoying. If I'm going to have sympathy for one of those children, it's definitely Todd, not Derek. Todd seems cute.

Wooo! Janine goes wild!
Derek Masters guest starred on a kids detective show, so that makes himan expert on actually BEING a detective? What kind of logic is that?
I really like the Janine makeover scene in this book. It was nice to see Janine and Claud interact and not fight. And Claudia being amazed that Janine got grounded was cute, especially when Claud decided to bask in the glow of being the good daughter for two whole days. I wonder if Mr. and Mrs. Kishi ever caught on...

I totally agree! Derek was too obsessed with always trying to convince everybody he was just a normal kid. It got to be a bit too much.

I liked the Janine makeover as well. It was cute to see Janine and Claudia spend sisterly time with each other

Okay, this was kind of a lame mystery, and would have been much better back in the normal series as a sub plot or something. But I thought it was cool janine was getting trouble And Claud basking in being the good one I like the Masters, Derek seemed pretty down to Earth really.

I think that's probably what they meant, but the author worded it poorly.
