Anyone have anything interesting to say about this book? I don't... it was so obvious that the "ghost" was Thrash. And honestly, then he shaves his head, takes off his lame snake ring, takes out his earrings and NO ONE recognizes him? Really???
Mysteries are so dull!

This one was so boring. When I started reading it I couldn't wait to be done but that is the way with most mysteries...

I just couldn't deal with all the descriptions of them NOT finding clues.

Mysteries without the entire BSC just aren't the same. I liked the camp-out-beach-dinner-cookout thing they had! The food sounded good.

Glad I'm not the only one who was bored by this one. There just seemed to be nothing to it. I wasn't as annoyed by the subplot as I thought I might be after seeing it was about the Arnolds but didn't care for it. I have never been able to get into the Dawn in CA books, anyway, and this one just didn't interest me at all. I didn't hate it but it is one of my least favorite mysteries. It was a quick read, though.

I agree too. I missed that post when I wrote my original. Except I'm surprised that Dawn the "health food nut" was eating smores at the cookout - maybe she wasn't eating them, though, and it was just the kids. I was kind of skimming the book by that point

Agree that this one is terribly predictable, but I always kinda liked it. It was probably because of the food--loved the campout/cookout thing, Dawn, Sunny, Jill and Maggie just hanging out at the beach, eating sandwiches and reading magazines, when Dawn and Stephie get smoothies, etc. I also liked when Thrash gave Dawn his ring, hearing about Dawn and Sunny's surfing obsession, and their involvement with that after school program. I think it has cool cover art too--Dawn looks pretty, her outfit is consistent with what she's described as wearing in the book, and the "ghostly" surfer riding the greenish-blue waves is spooky.
The subplot was way boring, though. I don't much care for the Arnolds and I always skipped over those parts...

If Dawn likes surfing so much, why didn't she take the chance to go surf in "California Girls?" That would have made more sense than having Stacey suddenly end up obsessed with it.

Dear sweet, boring, misguided Dawn,
Now, it may just be me, but when you moved from Conneticut to California you lost all rights to be in the babysitters club. Sure, I have to listen to your friends whine and cry that you're gone every chapter 2, but that should be the extent of it. Not in conneticut = not in a book.
And, your dad is lying to you. Long distance isn't all that expensive.
And, every time you spoke in surfer slang, you made me cringe. you grommet you
love and kisses, jane

You know I always wonder why in sooo many BSC books, they go on and on about how short they have to keep their long distance calls because it's soooo expensive. It really isn't! Maybe it was back then?! I have always found that odd, and you just reminded me of it, myrnaloy

I don't even mind that there's books of Dawn in California, but I do mind that there's still a chapter two describing all her conneticut friends that won't even be mentioned or may be mentioned once. Why?? WHY??

Just read this book for the first time and I actually liked it. I feel kind of silly after reading this thread because I honestly didn't figure out the mystery until the very end! I'm sort of on a Dawn in CA kick right now, though, so that probably helped. I loved reading about her and Sunny hanging out and surfing. Dawn's love for surfing did seem to come out of nowhere -- like starrynight said, she didn't seem that into it in California Girls -- but it was still cool to imagine her out there on a surfboard. Oh and I liked how the kids who got into that car accident with Stacey in CA Girls showed up again, as well as Stephie, Erick, and Ryan. Continuity like that always makes me happy! I liked the subplot too. I've always been pretty neutral about Marilyn and Carolyn, but they were sweet in this book. I doubt their situation would have happened in real life (I certainly never refused to separate myself from my twin sister even after accidentally hurting her or whatever...) but for some reason I found Marilyn to be really cute and genuine in this one. This book, along with Dawn's Portrait, makes me want to read CA Diaries really bad. I love California Dawn!

I also agree with many of your other thoughts (everything except loving CA Dawn - I prefer CT Dawn but I know that's our usual thing of being opposites on ;D
