^I thought most of the older guy stuff in the books tended to be cheesy even as a kid...Scott, Travis, Georgio, etc. Even though I too had crushes on older guys and everything. I usually liked the mysterious boy plots more...Terry Hoyt, Cary Retlin... Oh, well, I did like reading about Guy the ski instructor

^ I agree. There {is} something - dare I say sexy - about the mysterious boys like Cary and even Michel.

Oh, well, I did like reading about Guy the ski instructor laine's boyfriend king was the cheesiest of them all. i actually kind of liked georgio, but the writers clearly didn't have too much experience with teen boys, because all of them were ridiculous.

^ It's amazing that he's inspired so much hate, considering the fact that he only had one line in one book...and that line was over the phone.

Could the boy on the cover be Erick DeWitt? He was the person who first saw (and pointed out to Dawn) the "surfer ghost." For a change Dawn had no comment about the hot dogs and hamburgers being barbecued . I was glad to see Dawn writing to her mom. I do wonder what Sharon thought of Dawn surfing unsupervised (by her dad) and would have liked to hear Dawn tell her mom all about the "mystery" as she promised simply to see some interaction between them long distance. I say this also because maybe, finally, that could have led to Dawn asking her mom if she'd ever considering visiting her in Palo City. I have to agree about Marilyn and Carolyn, they are rather blah. At least this book (IMO) was much more tolerable (readable) than "Stacey and the Cheerleaders," I don't care for that at all. Too much of everything, I think and I really did not like Stacey's character in it as i've posted in that thread before. Onto Claudia's (futile) Search for her perfect boy.

Oh this was tough to get through. How did no one know it was him. Also, I don't think 20 year olds would be taking advice from a 13 year old.
Who comes up with these ridiculous names ... Grommet??!

I did reread the Marilyn and Carolyn sub-plot and really the only thought of interest was if they took gymnastics classes from Karen's teacher, Mrs. Donovan. It would have been awesome had Karen made a non big house related appearance in a BSC book. Also as we have discussed many a time, it can be much easier and more meaningful to use characters we already know than one time. Surely Marilyn and Carolyn could have, at least one of them filled in for one or two of the girls in Karen's Cartwheel.
I did love that Gozzie Kunka was mentioned in this one and thought it was sweet that she was looking out for Carolyn (Gozzie was originally Marilyn's imaginary friend). I thought Margo's Flying Horses tape (I think it was a tape) and Haley's Princess Power video game sounded a whole lot more interesting than a lot of the rest of this book. I know, one last thing, it was really nice how Mary Anne immediately called Sharon for help after Carolyn had her accident and Sharon came pronto, too. I would have enjoyed more interaction between them.

I used to think Flying Horses was a VHS tape, but maybe it was a singing group?

^A VHS tape would make more sense, though Karen and Nancy had a great time listening to and also making their own tape in Karen's Spy Mystery. I Googled "Flying Horses" and it was a song by a group called Dispatch. From what I read of the lyrics they don't sound much like something a 7 year old would be into. I prefer the video idea. Only other idea is in Joni Mitchell's "The Circle Game," one of the lyrics refers to carousel horses "painted ponies go up and down." I used to enjoy that song as a kid and always thought of merry go round fun. I have learned there are some horses called "paint ponies," and will always think of them with the song, too. Perhaps the tape or song reminded Margo of riding the carousel at Disney World ETA: www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/dispatch/flyinghorses.html www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/jonimitchell/thecirclegame.html

Dispatch would have come out after the book was published. I think it was just something they made up.

This book is forever going to remind me of The Adventures of Kimmy Schmidt! (If you haven't seen it, one of the characters "fakes" a boyfriend and basically ends up describing Thrash and it called out by Kimmy who has read the BSC series when she was trapped in a bunker for many years).
I feel like this mystery would have been best left unresolved, like Ghost Cat. I liked the idea of the surfer ghost but I question how Trash would be able to surf without being noticed, even at night (he'd eventually have to come back to shore).

I stopped reading after three chapters because the stupid surfing names put me off. Thrash? Do I miss much? I hope Dawn's next mystery is better.
