This is one of my favorite mysteries. I felt bad for Alan when he received the fake valentine grams. I think that the girls he embarrassed by showing their valentine grams over school deserved it. What they did was just mean.
LMAO.

The one annoying thing is that the outfit Stacey is wearing on the cover, she wore at the end of the book (and she didn't find any Valentine's Day grams posted on the lockers then, either). That was the day the bag of stolen grams was returned.

Also, how does everyone feel about Stacey not turning Alan in in the end? And wouldn't people be annoyed that two copies of grams were sent out. And shouldn't Stacey have notified the teachers or principal that they were returned?

I'm not sure why but I never liked seeing this side of Alan. I prefer it when he's crashing art shows and smugly running for president. Trying to make him human in this book and Stacey's Movie didn't work for me. At least Cokie's character always remained intact.
I can't stand Stacey's hair on this cover! I know she's just getting with the times, but her longer curlier hair is so her.

I didn't like this book though Mathew's crush on MA was cute. As for Alan I think since he was 95% the class clown or causing someone some type of "trouble" it didn't work well when he was made into anything else. I will say his character was one thing I did enjoy about the FF Series, though I wished he and Kristy would have at least become friends.

Does the inscription in the Valentine on the cover nearest Stacey's shoulder look like it says, "Hugs for Mona" to anyone else? If so, guess my opinion of this book (overall) should be upped. As always, I loved the Mathew part and wish that (the kids) had been more of a focus than the "mystery." I also liked the girls enthusiasm over the kids' books Ms. Feld had put out as her favorites. It was nice to see them acting less than mini-adult. Finally, a funny moment I never caught before comes on page 14. Stacey tell us "Claudia is the Junk Food Queen of the Universe. Workers in the Ring-Ding factory probably toil away under a gold-framed portrait of Claudia."

I liked this one! I liked how all the kids were worried about who liked who which seems pretty realistic to me. I loved reading the sappy valentines that people tried to make up - puh-leeze!

I liked this book until the ending. I thought there was so much more that ghostie could have done with this. As a loyal BSC fan, Alan Grey as the scapegoat/criminal was really lame. It's almost like a drawback or something. Let's pin it on Alan ... again. It was almost like inflating a balloon and then letting all the air out at the end. A big, wet noodle for me (the end). Plus Stacey never really solves the mystery, either. She goes to Cary and then he tells her. I guess in the end she gets the information, but still...
I mentioned in my previous post how Stacey's outfit on the cover doesn't match up in the book. She wears that outfit in the end of the book, not when any V-Day grams are posted on the lockers...
I think if the ending was re-written then it could be one of the top mysteries.
Edited to add: I forgot to say that the Robert parts should have been left out. Or they should have foreshadowed Robert's issue. In Stacey's Ex-Boyfriend, they repeat *a lot of the same things*. They have the same exact conversations, almost as if the Stacey and Robert subplot in this book didn't happen.

Does the inscription in the Valentine on the cover nearest Stacey's shoulder look like it says, "Hugs for Mona" to anyone else? i see it! i hate how the bsc has to involve themselves in everything. when kristy hears the library is planning on having a valentine's day party for the kids, she immediately suggests they combine forces and throw the party together. she meets with them before her sitting job with the hobarts, sets up a focus group to find out what the kids like, and they actually help set up and supervise the party. just leave those poor librarians alone. they work with kids for a living -- they can handle a simple party without seven extra girls running around. also, i think it's kind of presumptious for kristy to assume to library would want their help or even need it.

^ Kristy needing to have a hand in running everything that happened in Stoneybrook was definitely a theme of the series. It would have been FANTASTIC if someone had said "thanks but no thanks" just once!

Okay, I just mentioned this in the anime thread and had to bring it here. Did anyone else think the "arrangement" between Mr. Halpern and Cary sounded...potentially dirty? I dunno, I keep thinking that Cary has to do certain, uh, "favors" for him in exchange for his own space in the basement... This made me lol and what's especially telling is that he likes doing things in reclusive dim places like that room in the basement. I thought it was funny how Stace started rambling on about her new watch after getting distracted by Claudia's mentioing of it when time was of the essence to find Cary. And why would Cokie just trust Stacey with the cards she wrote to that guy if she knew that she and Stacey were enemies?

This book was silly, chiefly because of Cary in the basement (come on, really?) and the stripes clue. Just because someone is wearing stripes on the day they copy a valentine-gram doesn't mean they'll be wearing stripes the next day. Or was it the same day?

Now that this book is a current topic again, I'm looking more carefully at the cover. It still looks like it says "Hugs for Mona." And I tried to squint as close as I could to the others and I think they might be names of Ann's fellow Scholastic employees and/or friends of hers because they truly look as though they are inscribed with actual names. The one at the very top maybe says "Pauline Maljo?" Although the one closest to Stacey's left hand appears to say something like "wow you're ---"The one by the locker handle looks close to "Tammy Vicento?" Lol, this is a Valentine's Mystery in November! Any ideas?

Very entertaining fun, somehow the mystery and romantic themes/plots worked really well together. Alan was pretty obviously guilty, especially as he wasn't focused on much, but the other suspects and investigating of them were well-done. Stacey and Cary seemed pretty mature without feeling out-of-place. Very funny that Stacey admitted how boy-crazy she had been about many boys but insisted her relationship with Ethan was different, more meaningful. Edit: Also that she managed to out-gross Kristy about food.
Having the sitters have a kids focus group about what they liked about Valentine's Day is ridiculous yet as it was done didn't feel too ridiculous, instead the comments and reactions were pretty nice. Particularly nice that there was a lot of differences about how much or not they were interested in romance/liking people vs. just appreciating them.
