According to my handy list organized by date of publication, Jessi and the Dance School Phantom came out five months before the first mystery was published. It was the last of the "mysterious" books in the regular series, so I guess it was written just before they decided to make the Mysteries their own spin-off. But yeah, it did meet all of the qualifications and if it had been written later I bet Jessi could have had two Mysteries instead of one! I guess Mal could have had another Mystery too - Mallory and the Mystery Diary.

That explains it. Makes sense as Mallory and the Mystery Diary is another candidate for the mystery series. Guess we can still consider them part of that.

Yeah, I never really noticed they only had one, but I guess it's not fair. Maybe they thought 13 year olds getting into deadly situations was okay, but drew the line at 11 year olds, hehe.

^ Dance School Phantom was deadly enough but I guess that was written before the mystery series started. Maybe that explains some of this but not sure why they didn't write later Mal and Jessi mysteries. Kind of like how they didn't do Portraits for them.

^ I dont think they did portraits because it was an eighth grade thing and none of the other grades did it, though I can totally see mallory getting into writing her own book . Jessi...meh... she wasn't much of a writer, but she liked to read.

I know the excuse for not having portraits for them was because it was an 8th grade assignment but was just thinking that the authors could have made a different excuse that would have included Jessi and Mal. ;D

^yeah, like they thought the assignment was so dibbly cool, so they convinced someone to let them do that project with their friends instead of taking the aerobic dance unit that could undo all of jessi's dance training, and Mallory does hte project as an independant study instead of writing "what I did over my ________ vacation/holiday/long weekend".
Or have it be a schoolwide project.

^ That's what I thought they should have done, too. If so many trips and things like short takes could involve the whole school, why not this? ;D I just wish there were more books about Mal and Jessi's early life as they are two of my favorite sitters.

^ I wondered if the two of them would do it anyway cause it was dibbly cool, lol. Dance School Phantom wasn't scary, Jessi knew that it was a fellow dancer the whole time... I think.

^ Even though she knew it was a fellow dancer, the threats were still pretty scary, I think. One of her classmates could have been seriously dangerous....

I dislike Mallory passionately so when I get to my mysteries and am going to be glad to be Mallory Free for a while. JESSI, I adore Jessi. She is so cool, and i love the fact that she is black too. We need more black hero/heroines in kid books, with down to earth REAL people. Too many times I find stereotypes and racial profiling within black characters in childrens book/tv

I am kind of disappointed. I would have also like to hear more from Mallory and Jessi. They could have done a biography type of book like they did with Shannon and Logan.

I would have loved to see more Jessi mysteries for sure cause I loved Dance School Phantom. I know people here have criticized it for club members not opening up to family about dangerous things like these, but it can be scary admitting things happening cause of not being believed or being blamed or in her case, being afraid to lose the role.
