I thought this was a pretty good mystery, but there was a very big hole in the dognappers' plan, which is how they get caught in the end: Seriously, why did they think it was a good idea to steal dogs in several towns and sell the stolen dogs in a pet store in one of those towns? Why in the world wouldn't you sell the dogs someplace a lot further away? Couldn't you see that the chances of somebody recognizing a stolen purebred Great Dane is pretty darn good if you sell her to someone who lives in a nearby town?
Also, at least it's not as bad as Sergeant Johnson later letting the BSC do an inappropriate amount of his work for him, but the cop that Dawn talks to is a jerk. It shouldn't be that hard to convince a police officer to check out evidence, even if you are just a kid. Cops are supposed to check out "leads" given to them by the public even if they know they're totally stupid, like a psychic saying she just has a "feeling" that a missing kid is in a certain area. If a dog is stolen, and a person remembers a car driving slowly and following them around when they were walking the dog the day before, a cop isn't very likely to assume there's no way it could possibly have any bearing on the case and refuse to look into it unless you keep bugging them about it.

She also talks to some jerky cops in Dawn and the Surfer Ghost.

I was on a swingset tonight and I remembered another thing I liked about this book -- when Dawn actually swings on a swing at the playground. She says she thinks only little kids can swing for a long time, but I just like that she goes on the swing at all. The baby-sitters are always going out of their way to act like Mature and Responsible like mini-adults, so it's nice to see one of them on a swingset just for fun!

I have to agree with her that little kids have more stamina when it comes to swinging...I can't do it without getting nauseous now, but I could go for ages when I was little!

I wonder if while swinging she had twinges of memory from when Claudia broke her leg on one?
I could imagine Kristy having more stamina than little kids but I guess not Dawn.

I think my behind is too big for swing-sets. It always gets crushed by the swing and is a pretty uncomfortable experience.

Whats wrong with talking to animals Dawn? Im only two pages in but disliking Dawn and her hatred of animals. And whats wrong with kissing cats? I used to kiss mine all the time.
Obvious Dawn hates animals.

I always thought Dawn was an interesting choice of main character for this book. Maybe because she was impartial/indifferent to animals?

I read this once at a library at a school I worked at for my temporary job..I know people have plantbased diets for reasons other than loving/pitying animals..some do it for health reasons, some do it for religious reasons, so I didn't think it was too weird that Dawn wasn't vegetarian because she felt sorry for the cow..what I wanted to know is, how does she know the taste of red meat isn't that great when she never tried it before because the thought of eating "cow carcass" makes her want to puke? That's what I don't get.

^ That's a good point. Maybe they should have said she doesn't like the smell of meat.

Well in another Mystery she had mentioned her mom raised her to believe it's better to have natural foods.

A contradiction here. Dawn is a vegetarian so you'd expect her to love animals. But she's an animal hater.

This one was kind of a struggle to get through. It wasn't hard to read or anything, just for some reason didn't hold my attention much (and I love dogs and am one of those people who actually likes the Krushers).
I found Dawn tiring in this. We get it, you don't HATE animals, you just don't really care about pets. I also don't get why she didn't just go for the walk first... the hamster cage could've waited for a cleaning. Not saying she's at fault (what she did was kind of stupid, but if this happened irl, I wouldn't blame her because people have moments of stupidity).
I guess I also found the mystery pretty implausible. This is true of many mysteries, but I just don't know how this scheme would be all that lucrative. It feels so random too, like how did Tate think of this idea?
I did like seeing the girls crack the case, and it's done pretty well. The officer not taking them seriously at first does make sense, although he was a little too rude.
The dinner Sharon makes sounds so good. Tofu curry, brown rice, and seaweed salad for Dawn and lasagna for MA and Richard. Then she kind of ruins it when MA tries a small bite of the tofu and Richard won't try it. "I’ve learned by now that it’s next to impossible to convert people to health foods if they don’t want to be converted." Omg SHUT UP. Haven't Dawn and Sharon eaten lasagna several times? That's just so obnoxious.
I didn't care about the Krashers plot, but was sort of disappointed that we didn't get to see most of the game. Yay, they won, but I'm not feeling it because I didn't see it.
I have to say the scene where Dawn just knocks over sodas and steps on people's feet to get out of the stands was actually pretty funny.
This was kind of funny: when Dawn notices the woman with Cheryl, she calls the police and is like, "I'm glad I remember the number." Um... isn't it just 911? Lol! Unless she means the non-emergency line.
Totally relatable when Dawn cries at Mrs. Mancusi's reuniting with Cheryl. I've definitely cried at similar videos online.
Overall, though, yeah, not a great mystery. I also think that Dawn's character has sadly jumped the shark by this point (probably happened in Saves the Planet). She was one of my favorites in the early series, but later on it's like they didn't know what to do with her character.

It would have been more in character for Dawn to dislike pets because she believes animals shouldn't be locked up. Some vegans are against animals as commodities in all forms and believe keeping pets falls into that.

It would have been more in character for Dawn to dislike pets because she believes animals shouldn't be locked up. Some vegans are against animals as commodities in all forms and believe keeping pets falls into that. Sunny's mother was like this, and I respect this viewpoint. The way it was worded in this book was just... weird. It's totally okay to not be a pet person, but it does seem to come out of left field in this book. And, I forgot to say in my post, Dawn's reason for being vegetarian is because she doesn't like the taste of red meat. Before this, it was heavily implied that it was for health reasons. This makes her "ews" and everything even more annoying and just makes her sound immature (a lot like my brother-in-law when he's around food he doesn't like, actually). It would be a little more understandable if she found it morally offensive.
