I read and own this book. Love it! I love Shanon's and Abby's chapters.

I like Shannon's too. I think I remember them being pretty short though. Shannon needed more "airtime"!

I think out of all the super mysteries, this one scared me the most.

[snipped for length] I was really annoyed with Mary Anne and her stupid handwriting and her Logan drama; but I did like it when Shannon was trapped in that room with Logan and Mary Anne. I thought it was scary and amusing. The climax was kind of lame, and I was am really concerned about the BSCs reaction to criminals. They could have been seriously hurt. They should have told someone. Mal volunteering to go through the notebook and copy over all the mystery crap? Girl needs a hobby. How about Ben? I didn't like the MA/Logan note subplot either. Cary needs someone to tell him that making a girl break up with her BF might not be the best way to win her over. Seriously, though, was there any point to that 'prank'? He'd have to sneak samples of their writing and learn to copy it well enough to fool MA and Logan and I'd imagine that would take some time. I guess it was for the sake of adding another 'suspect' to the stalker list. At least in this book they didn't have some stupid idea about catching the criminal to be heroes. I'm always boggled by the way they never tell their parents, but MA and Kristy both gave reasons that I could maybe understand: MA was afraid her dad would be all overprotective again, and Kristy didn't want to stress Watson out. Mal loves that mystery notebook! I laughed when I read the part where she's babysitting for the Rodowskys, spots some kid at the house next door and rushes for the notebook. The Rodowskys must have thought she was insane. (And now I need to find 'Fright Night' for more evidence that Ben Hobart was never Mal's One True Love- the notebook was! ;D) I finished rereading this book again today and I wondered why MA doesn't have a 'major' event happen to her. Kristy has the rock thrown through the window, Claud has the arson attack and Stacey is nearly run over. MA does have the guy watching her, but compared to the others, it's fairly... mild. I'm also struck again by how convenient it is that Jessi and Mal were both cut from the photo that set Woodie Tate after everyone, and then both had a prearranged sitting job that prevented them from going to Shadow Lake. Random bits I liked: - Shea Rodowsky's apron while Mal's sitting for them: 'BARBECUE ON, DUDES.' Archie gets a dishcloth, lol. - The make-up tattoos! I remember being so jealous they got to play with make-up as a kid. - MA: Logan had mentioned the possibility of going to a 'real' restaurant. What, like Chez Maurice or something? What is Stoneybrook paying their busboys that they can afford that? - The burglar kid getting caught stealing and saying 'Uh... it's a joke!' - The Pikes looking for the tattooed guy and Margo wanting to look in the ice-cream store. (I also just remembered how I got my first copy of this book: One of my old teachers offered me this book or Sweet Valley's ' Murder in Paradise.' I don't know if I regret not taking the other one!)

the fact that the mystery notebook was suddenly introduced as new in this book bothered me. hadn't they been keeping a mystery notebook for quite some time before this book even came out? am i wrong?

No, this book introduced the Mystery Notebook. They took notes on the mysteries, of course, but this is the book where Mal obsessively compiled all of these notes and made an official mystery notebook.

I wanted to try doodling some of the outfits described in the BSC books (mainly Claudia and/or Stacey outfits) and I decided to start with this one just because it's the one I'm reading now. So on pages 24 and 25, Jessi tells us that Stacey "wore black leggings with cowboy boots, an oversized turtleneck sweater, and this cool black suede vest with pearl buttons...Stacey had gone for your basic gold earrings." She also says that Claudia "was wearing leggings, too - purple ones - with black Doc Martens, red slouch socks, black bicycle shorts over the leggings, a big T-shirt with the words "This Might Be Art" scrawled on it in purple (I knew she'd made it herself), and an old black suit jacket of her father's, with the sleeves rolled up...Claudia's earrings were purple feathers (she made those herself, too)." So here's Stacey's. They didn't say the color of the sweater, but I'm assuming it was also supposed to be black. But I thought that many layers of black looked bad, so I made the sweater gray. I wasn't sure what to do with her hair (perm or not), so I tried to make it look sorta like her hair on the cover. Stacey, I kinda liked the sound of your outfit until we got to the part with the pearl buttons. And then here's Claudia. They didn't say the color of the t-shirt - in my mind I pictured it red. I wanted to draw her in a side pony tail, but I figured if Jessi didn't describe it, her hair was just down. Has anyone else tried drawing some of the outfits in the books? Or recreating the outfits with actual clothes? I would really, really love to see other people's pictures.

A few notes: -I thought the cover was totally lol-able. The Mysterious Guy looks good, but Kristy and Stacey are looking not even remotely near him. And Andrew is obliviously happy. The skis are broken (even though in the book, only the ski poles are broken). And in the book, Andrew had already left (with his parents) by the time this scene came. I guess they try to squeeze a kid on the cover whenever possible! -I was disappointed that most of the book actually took place in Stoneybrook. The book is supposed to be about their trip to Shadow Lake, and they don't even leave for Shadow Lake until the book is over halfway done. -The Mary Anne/Logan plot was ugh lame. I guess they couldn't think of any other plot to involve Mary Anne and had to come up with something quick. How on EARTH did the Note Writer think this plan would work? Anyone with common sense would realize that this huge dilemna would be solved with: Mary Anne: Logan, why did you write me this creepy note? Logan: I didn't write you a creepy note. Did you write me this creepy note? Mary Anne: No. This "mystery", which could have been resolved in a paragraph, was instead extended into several chapters. The plot was so half-assed, they couldn't even come up with an answer of who sent the notes. They just left it as "Hmmm, looks like they just happened to get some disturbing notes at the same exact time that two other completely unrelated mysteries started to plague the BSC." -The description of this "cozy cabin" - which has dormitory-style bedrooms, which are "two bunk rooms that can sleep a dozen people each", makes me lol because that description instantly makes me think of some cult headquarters, like the YFZ Ranch in Texas. I think Watson's family has a secret! -I liked the Claudia/Abby fight, because I thought it was pretty realistic for an 8th grade girl to be so petty and jealous and insecure over something like that.

About the cover: I'm working on a snark of Baby-sitters Haunted House, and I find it amusing that in both that cover and this one Kristy is snuggled up against another sitter (MA and Stacey, respectively.)

^Hahaha!
It's mentioned in Chapter 2 that the Rodowsky boys once got together with the Arnold and Braddock kids and treated the BSC to lunch. What book did that happen in? I don't remember it.
It seemed like the word 'startled' was used a million times in this book, I seriously got tired of coming across it.
What exactly was Woodie going to do in the end? Toss everyone in the lake, one by one? They were almost at the lodge by the time he grabbed Stacey. If he really wanted to do permanent damage, he would have set the cabin on fire or something. And how did he even know they would be at Shadow Lake? Was he listening outside Claudia's window during meeting times or something?
Mallory getting distracted by the tattooed guy at the pizza place and asking for a blue pizza was lame but funny.

I liked that some of the girls went to Shadow Lake and that the present mystery tied to a previous mystery about Karl Tate. I also like how Kristy was worried about Watson; I thought that was sweet of her.
I think this is the scariest mystery because of the arson, the closed ski route that Claudia was going to take, Stacey nearly being run over by a car, a snow blower turning on while Kristy was skiing causing her to fall and Stacey getting stuck on a chairlift while it was snowing.
Celaeno, great drawings.

Now that I've thought about it, Claudia does look like a modern day Mulan in that picture.

From three months ago, but I'm sure the suspense was killing you, booboobrewer:
I want to say it was Claudia's Friend (which I always call Claudia's Friend Friend in my head). I don't remember specifically which kids were involved, but I do recall the Rodowskys being part of it.
