For mysteries no. 33 - 36, the only cover designs for those I have seen have this wide lightning bolt design through it, with a picture within a rectangular frame in the middle. Are there any alternative cover designs for those ones? Hi.

To the best of my knowledge, those are the only cover designs for those books.

^ Truthfully, I never noticed the differences in these covers. Now I'll have to look. I do like the dark colors on the mystery books, though, for something different. Goes with the whole "mystery" theme too. It was a dark, stormy night (as Mal might start a story) ;D

in these ones the colors aren't as dark... stacey and the stolen hearts is hot pink and turquoise.

^ I do remember that one being pretty. I liked her outfit on it, too. ;D I also remember a purple one in the later mysteries. I'll have to look now.

^ I like that cover too, but it doesn't really fit in.

I like both the new and old mystery covers. I think on the newer ones the babysitters tend to look more cute on them though. I like the layouts to both though.

Yeah, they're illustrated by Ed Acuna.
I like the new layouts. I wonder why they appeared so late in the mystery series.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why they changed the mystery covers? Especially since the new covers are only for 4 books: Stacey and the Stolen Hearts; Mary Anne and the Haunted Bookstore; Abby and the Notorious Neighbour; Kristy and the Cat Burglar (sorry, Claud, you don't get one. And forget about Mallory and Jessi as they were never in the running).
It seems odd to spend all the money on revamping the look when Scholastic was only going to end the series a few books later. Maybe they didn't know that when they planned the Mystery relaunch?

There was a different artist for the last four books.

I guess we will never know why they changed it. Maybe they just wanted to make them more prettier and nicer and see how they do. And I don't think they ever did gave a reason why they changed the final 4 Mystery books covers.

^ Yeah, I don't think they would have put out a press release stating why the books changed. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas. I found it strange that they would put in all of the money to edit 4 mystery book covers, especially when the series -- as this time -- was apparently failing. Maybe they didn't know that at the time the mysteries were being changed?
I think there might have been over a year from when Stacey and the Stolen Hearts (Feb 1998) and The Fire at Mary Anne's House (May 1999).
