I often like to speculate on what would have happened in a fictional story if something differently had happened. The movie Sliding Doors deal with this topic (what if a woman caught the subway and what if she didn't). That makes me wonder about the BSC. For example, what if Kristy had accepted Mary Anne's make-up overtures the night after they had their fight in Mary Anne Saves the Day?
I think Kristy would have went back to being the best friends they were before. This would have led to Claudia and Stacey joining them soon after. Mary Anne and Dawn wouldn't have talked. Dawn would have spent a few days along and then made other friends (who?). Richard and Sharon would have eventually met up and started dating. Mary Anne and Dawn get to know each other that way and become friendly. However, since Mary Anne has Kristy they don't become best friends. The Babysitters Club finds out that she's a good babysitter and ask her to join the club. She does but is kind of the odd person out.
What what-if scenarios can you think of?

What if Stacey had taken Laine's advice and picked New York over Stoneybrook when her parents divorced because it was the easier choice?

Hmm, I wonder if Richard and Sharon would have met at all if it hadn't been for MA and Dawn. Maybe Sharon would have even decided that she didn't like Stoneybrook and missed her friends in Palo.

That's an interesting idea too. Maybe if it weren't for Mary Anne, Dawn wouldn't have made any friends and been miserable. Maybe after awhile of not meeting Richard and with two unhappy kids, Sharon would have decided to go back to California. I kind of like that scenario.
If Stacey had stayed in New York, I wonder if she and Laine would have still fallen out? I think it would have happened eventually and Stacey would have ended up back in Stoneybrook in the long run.

I always wondered what it would be like if Logan had never meet MA. Probably would have left more to Shannon's stories.

What if Mallory (and Jessi) had never joined the club after the whole "divestive" system debacle? That would have made for some awkward sitting jobs at the Pikes...

What if Kristy's dad was in the picture to begin with and they were a happy family and there would never have been Watson or Karen, for example?

^ I wouldn't have minded losing Watson and Karen as characters, but so much of what made Kristy interesting for me at the beginning of the series was her struggle to accept Watson into the family. I'd hate to lose those subplots!

That's true starrynight, good points And perhaps if the series started with Patrick and the family intact and then, over the first few books, depicted Patrick and Kristy's mom's (can't remember her name! What was it again, anyone?) relationship breaking up and then would actually SHOW Kristy's feelings of her father moving away etc- could make for some different interesting subplots, I think

^ Kristy's mom is called Elizabeth (though Karen called her Edith in Kristy's Great Idea).

What if Logan really was sent to boarding school? I wonder if the distance would have broken MA and Logan up sooner or made the hearts grow fonder.

^ That depends....are we talking about what would happen in terms of real life or in terms of BSC-land?

I think once Mary Anne got a taste of freedom, it'd be "buh-bye, Logan."

She would've dumped him: bye Logan!
