That's true... by the sounds of it, she shaved her legs before she got a bra.

Yeah, I don't remember her ever getting a bra. Of course, details that 'risque' were only mentioned in the earlier books.
Also, they never had periods, which was strange considering those books featured 13 yr old girls. All that puberty stuff is pretty big in the tweenage life, isn't it?

This is Stoneybrook though, remember...the only thing you do when you hit puberty is get a bra (but not, horror of horrors with your dad & a saleswoman, it's gotta be with your mum). After that, puberty's done

Heh, Lisa, that's so true!
It's *sort* of mentioned "Mary Anne and 2 Many Babies"... Mrs Boyden says that most of them are biologically capable of becoming parents.

I don't know why it would be necessary to talk about them getting their periods. I would assume they all had them, and at 13 years old, I certainly wasn't discussing my menstrual cycle with friends, so I never expected them too, either. I mean, really, how would they go about that? "Kristy walked into the bathroom and found a spot of blood on her underwear!" No way. Or "Stacey and Claud are mature, they have their periods!" - it's not appropriate for books that are aimed at like, 8-10 year olds.

"Claudia passed around the Twix bars only to realize, to her embarrassment, that they were actually her tampons."

Oh well, I suppose the older girls would already have an established menstrual cycle, particularly these days (I didn't when I was 13... ugh, it wasn't THAT long ago, was it?) but you could imagine the younger two, particularly Mallory, being curious about the event, worrying about it, asking the older girls for advice - you know, a type of 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret' thing.
Even the Wakefield twins got their periods in the Sweet Valley Twins series. I don't feel periods are inappropriate for young girls' to read about - well, no more inappropriate than bras and discussing how Stacey's bikini was filled out nicely.
Yeah and you have to point out that fact in absolute mortified horror, really drum in the point that your best friend's mother is dead.

That's true... by the sounds of it, she shaved her legs before she got a bra. LOL. There was a subplot in one of the books where the kids became interested in ordering all of this stuff from a catalogue, including "moondust." One of Mal's brothers (I think) got some kind of techno-bra. When Kristy heard about it she looked at her own chest and pined for the day that she would need one. As for Judy Blume (forget if that's the author) books, they are great. Especially "Forever" (not sure of the title). All of that adolescent sex.

Oh! Oh! That was "Stacey's Choice", where Vanessa orders a bust developer. And Claire chases her and asks her what a bust is. Heh.

I loved Judy Blume as well and yeah, the book you're thinking of was called Forever. Even by today's standards, that book is pretty risque, what with Ralph the pee-pee and all. I also remember Then Again, Maybe I Won't - young Tony with his binoculars. What a little perv!

When I was in junior high school, having your period was absolutely mortifying. I can remember waiting until a toilet flushed in the bathroom before I'd begin unwrapping my supplies, because god forbid anybody heard that incriminating crinkle. So I don't think the girls not talking about their periods is unrealistic at all - unless my experience was out of the ordinary. I never talked about my period with my friends until I hit high school. I also can't really see Mallory and Jessi asking the older girls about it. When I was 11 or 13, it just wasn't something that was discussed amongst friends.

/\ My jr. high didn't have any machines in the bathrooms, so if you had an unexpected problem you had to track down the gym teacher and ask for a tampon. Talk about embarassing.
When they did their author projects in Mary Anne Misses Logan, Kristy thought it would be hilarious if Alan Gray got Judy Blume and had to read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret because "there's bra stuff in there!" No mention that it's about a girl praying for her period. Stupid girl, that Margaret.

I remember not knowing what a bust was either when I first read this and wondered why Vanessa would stuff it under her shirt. Heehee. It did seem that the only references to puberty had to do with bras...first-time shopping, the Kristy-Alan-Margaret reference, Pete Black snapping Emily's (or was it Dorianne's?) bra strap. That's true. I bet they'd just think about it a lot. Mal would probably just write and wonder in her journal!

^ Ew... I wouldn't put it past her, though.
Funny, I remember discussing periods/puberty and all that with close friends. I guess everyone's experiences are different, though.
