I agree with ktag. I could see Mary Anne thinking it would be romantic and sweet, but being totally mortified because being carted around in a carriage is sure to draw a lot of attention from neighbors! I wonder what Richard thought of the whole thing. And honestly, how absolutely unrealistic is it? A 13 year old planning a carriage ride for his girlfriend? um, okay. I personally would be horrifically embarrassed if anyone ever did that for me, lol.

Just reread and liked it as always - love Sea City books and this one had all of the classic elements. I liked the kids' chapters and enjoyed reading about Mrs. Barrett's relationship with her kids. They are so cute. Thought Jessi gave Mal good advice, kind of like in CA Girls, and was glad Mal didn't go out with Toby. I can see why Stacey was a little bitter in this one. There were lots of funny parts - loved the stuff about Claudia packing to evacuate, Nicky barfing in the van and about the camp, especially the scene at Mrs. Stone's farm. I read these parts to my parents to entertain them/keep them awake while driving and they were laughing out loud. I'm getting them hooked on the BSC I could understand Logan's jealousy (though he didn't really need to be) and thought it was kind of sweet. The carriage ride was, too. I love reading this book every summer - all of the Sea City books, really. I wish I could go there but will have to settle for imagining it (better that way, anyway Not my favorite Super Special but close to the top of my favorites list.

This was a good Super Special. It was pretty disgusting that a fifteen year old was interested in an eleven year old, but I'm always up for catty BSC fights! And Mal's awesome outfit with her pink flamingo hairclips (ugh, I can't see that looking nice on a red-head), famous people buttons and polka dot skirt. Her outfit notwithstanding, I think she actually looks kind of cute in that picture.
I didn't mind the mini-camp, but hated the Krusher's stuff, as always. Seriously, can't they think of something new for Kristy to do? Apparently not. And I loved the part about Claudia bringing the remote control to the test instead of her calculator - funny! I'm sure it's actually happened to people before.
The only thing that seemed really weird to me was Mary Anne's reaction to the hurricane. In other books she's the biggest wimp ever (she was afraid to wear her p.j.'s in public!), but in this one, she's excited about the hurricane! I know that people can often react differently than they normally would in extreme situations, but it seemed a little bit too off.
All in all, a fun Super Special! I'll always remember the tagline: Who invited Bill on their vacation?

Hi everybody I didn't like this one very much. I loved the 2 books about Sea City in the regular collection, but I though not much was happening in this one: the girls usually all have a plot. Plus, it's one of the books were it really shows it's a gost writter. There was expressions and sayings I never heard in other BSC books that just seemed weird. But Nicky was cute when he said to Margo,'' oh, go wash your head in bubblegum'' I expected more since I enjoyed the stories about Sea City in the other books.

I think the pajamas thing was, while ridiculous, really an example of her shyness. I guess it is a fear, but more of a social one, so I don't think a fear of hurricanes necessarily follows logically from it.

^ Totally agree. I think MA can be pretty brave/assertive in some situations and most of her fear is fear of rejection and of what others will think of her. I always like it when she shows her less "wimpy" side, like in this book. Claudia and Kristy's differences in packing to evacuate always give me a great laugh in this one ;D

Just finished this, therefore just finished reading the thread.
Not sure if I should admit this, but I did that once in high school. Well, fortunately I noticed it was a remote control when I pulled it out of my backpack and was able to throw it right back in the bag without anyone noticing. It was one of the hazards of doing homework while watching TV. *hangs head in shame*
I thought Dawn's ghost story in the barn was pretty scary for her audience of 4 and 8 year olds. Not to mention having a sleepover in a barn with those kids. Do 4 year olds have sleepovers? With teenage baby-sitters and 8 year olds?
None of the Mallory illustrations jumped out at me, but the one of the creepy clown rubbing Marnie/Ryan's head did. Go away creepy clown!
Mallory definetely wrote to Mrs. McGill because she had no one else to write to. Her second chapter started with a diary entry to herself. As always, Poor Mallory.

Okay I just read the blog on the blogspot thing for claudia's romo. I'm not done reading all the messages posts yet, so I'll just post this right now anyway. On the Toby/ Mallory thing. *shuddering* OKay when I was fifteen, my next door neighbor who was also fifteen at the time (he's three days older than me) was on a swim team. Right. Well...he ended up writing this book (he's an author) the book never got published... and I was the lucky one that got to type thing thing up for the hell of it. Anyway, basically teh book was about that summer...and his summer on the swim team.................. and about an eleven year old girl that he had a thing for. .. Yeah... No kidding. I thought he was nuts then. I didn't even remember the toby/mallory thing... and now reading these posts and that blog it brings it all back. *shudder* I have no idea what happened to her... just knew her first name... that was a bit... creepy.

^ That is creepy and pretty gross. Do you still know the guy? Did he end up with any other young girls? Anyway, sorry to get off topic with those questions.... I am getting ready to reread this book and always enjoy it when I am in my Sea City mood. I tend to get it confused with the other Sea City books, though. Does anyone else have that problem with parts of this one, Boy Crazy Stacey, and MA and Too Many Boys?

LMao... no...and we grew up next door to each other... he liked her...but it was just ... hell i dont know. but no he didn't go out with any younger girls... he stayed in our age bracket. Yeah I still know him. .. kind of. Lived next door to each other our whole lives, but since my family isn't in that house anymore, haven't seen him in over four years. He actually did get a book published... another weird one *rolls eyes*. but at least not freaky like the "summer of 99!" oh dear.

^^that reminds me of an episode of "The Golden Girls" whenever Dorothy asked Rose to place her ad in the want ads saying she'd do anything, no job too big or small, for $8. Rose ended up putting it in the personals. I love that episode! At one point, Blanche came in and said, "There's a busload of Greek sailors out front. They want to know how many drachma there are in $8." ;D

Did Claudia’s friends from summer school in Sea City Here We Come ever get mentioned again? I know that she said she was sad because they would probably never hang out after that but can’t remember why. Weren’t they from SMS? Were they in 8th grade? If they were in 7th, I’m surprised that she didn’t encounter them again when she went back.
