I did! ...No. Really. And, in fact, my thirteen-year-old self probably would have found a guy's changing voice...well, cute, at least.
...I'll just show myself out.

I recently acquired a copy of this book in French (the edition in which they live in Quebec), and in case anybody is interested, in this translation, instead of going to Vermont, they go here.

ok, i was just reading this again today (i was really, really bored) and i think it's interesting that when dawn is describing the lodge, she compares it to the hotel in the shining. honestly, does she REALLY think that her target audience of young children have read or seen the shining?

Eeek!! I just read this one for the first time recently (the original, American version as it's not translated ) and the the Shining comparison freaked me out!!! I saw the shining once when I was 16 (I'm 18 now) and I still get chills just thinking about it!!! Too scary!!!

Yeah, I had never heard of the book or the movie when I first read that. Interestingly I first saw The Shining when I was their age, 13. Love that in her comparison she says "You know, where all the scary things happened?" The scary things...that's an understatement!

I reread it and when I got to the part about The Shinning I raised my eyebrow. I defiantly would not expect the target audience of the books to get the reference, being the fact that I didn't see the movie until I was 15, and it scared the crap out of me, still does.

I still am too scared to watch it! I watched Carrie when I was 13 and it finished my desire to see scary movies - I still have nightmares from it

Stephen King movies scare the crap out of me in general. I think the one that scared me the most, was "It". To this day I am still terrified of clowns.

Ha! I'm glad there are other people who think the shining is scary. My friends are always mocking me for being so scared of it. Whenever we have a movie evening there's at least one of them going "Hmmm... I think I'll bring the shining... I know Inge will appreciate that..." and I can never help but to go: "Nooooo! Don't!!" and then they're all really entertained. Dawn really is a cool chick for not being scared of that movie at 13

I guess that's because Dawn is so into ghost stories and the supernatural Don't the girls make a comment about watching a R rated movie being a big deal (I think in SS #1)? Another inconsistancy because I would certainly assume that the Shining is R rated. Or maybe Dawn didn't watch it but just heard a description of the hotel in the movie? I haven't read this book for a while and can't remember the exact words used about the movie.

It was in Super special number 1 that Dawn talked about Jeff seeing an R rated movie and it wasn't a big deal. I believe in Winter vacation it was implied she had seen the movie..but I am not 100 percent sure on that one.

i suppose it is implied. she's basically saying to the reader that the lodge is as big as the hotel. so i guess that would mean she's seen it. still, i know that i read the BSC books when i was 8 or 9 and i had never even HEARD of the shining, let alone read or seen it. wtg, ann!

I didn't know quite a few of the references in the books when I was kid. Especially the movie ones.

Anybody who's scared of The Shining should watch this and see if it helps calm your fears...
