Your review just reminded me of which version of Peter Pan they were putting on. It was the mary margaret version and it was a big stage musical in the 70s (I believe?).
Do you mean Mary Martin? I think she did it in the 50s, before starring in Sound of Music. Also, yeah, this version with Tiger Lily and the Indians and some questionable songs would not fly today!

^ yes Mary Martin version! It was in the 50s which is what Ann would have grown up with and referenced the most.

Jessi is so annoying and entitled in this book and normally she is so level-headed. You know what, you make a good point about Dawn. If they can indulge Karen by letting her play a character that wasn't even going to exist aside from effects, they could indulge her too by giving her those extra lines. Not saying they SHOULD, just saying that given this series, it's not that farfetched. Plus Dawn does make some good points. I think the main issue was that Kristy was having terrible remembering her lines to begin with so this would really trip her up. It's weird, though, that she wanted to be Tiger Lily (she's the princess of the tribe in Neverland and gets captured by Captain Hook). I've only really seen the Disney version of Peter Pan, and holy cow is it racist af. Not sure if the original content is, but I'm guessing it's not much better. I think nowadays people are more aware of how awful indigenous people are treated and how problematic our media is in that regard (so basically maybe Dawn wasn't really educated on it because it wasn't common knowledge yet), so maybe that's it. I really don't like the story of Peter Pan because I can't get past the racism and sexism in it. Captain Hook and Tinkerbell save the Disney version from being totally unwatchable though (also Ilove "You Can Fly"). I can see how it's a fun play because of the characters. This play wouldn't happen today I don't think. I personally think Alice in Wonderland would be more fun and less offensive.

I hated them indulging Karen though. She always gets her way and she's a bully outside LS. People let her make up the rules because she's gifted and they want to nurture her creativity, but they're turning her into (I have to say it) a Karen. The director needed to get control over this performance because the kids were calling too many shots.

I remember her throwing a fit in this one and screaming that she wants to play Tinkerbell even though Mr. Cheney was explaining she's not a character in the stage play. Then they created the character just for her! What a brat.

It's more that Dawn's changes are actually somewhat reasonable compared to Karen's. Karen doesn't always bother me actually (she's okay in most books really), but for some reason, her brattiness is turned up to 11 in this book. Allowing things like this could create a monster.
