Poor Claudia, my heart ached when she was embarrassed by the teacher. Oh I felt bad too. If that's her most vivid memory it's no wonder she finds it so difficult to ask teachers for help.

Hmm, that is a good way of looking at it. I feel bad for her, if that really is her most vivid memory. It's kind of sad.

I don't remember Claudia's memory anymore as I haven't read this one forever. What was it? Also didn't remember this was the one that talked about Dawn's parents and the divorce. Always think that's in Dawn's Book. I do remember liking that part of whatever book it was in, though, and really feeling for Dawn. Agree, hitzpink, about being bored by Kristy's. I think from what I remember, Jessi and Stacey and Dawn's and some of Logan's were my favorites.

claudia's memory is that she had an art teacher who assigned them to do a self-portrait, and she drew a self-portrait of herself as butterfly. then her art teacher was like wtf. so mimi went and talked to the teacher and explained claudia's creative and symblolistic interpretation of the assignment.

That story always touched me. You made a good point Booboobrewer about how that could have made it hard for Claudia to talk to teachers.

That teacher made me so mad. I have friends who are in the elementary education field, and I would bet any money I have that they would be thrilled to have a kid interpret the assignment so creatively.
That was really one of the few times we got to see Claudia's "intelligence" too - I think she'd have had to have had an "above-average IQ" to even think to interpret the assignment that way instead of just doing a drawing of herself.

^ Thanks. I can't relate to Claudia as I'm the kind who almost always followed directions in school no matter what (and just kept the creative ideas in my head and was mad that I couldn't do them ;D) but agree about feeling for her. I will have to reread before I have more thoughts, though I remember liking MA's chapter better the last time I read than the first time I read this book. Isn't this the one where they sabotage the baby-sitter?

I love Claudia's story. I love how Mimi goes to the school and tells the teacher just what Claudia was thinking. She knew even though Claudia didn't tell her. She just was the best at understanding her.

I loved Mimi in Claudia's memory but other than that it kinda bugged me. I mean it was really just thrown in to make us think Claudia seriously is a true artist and has been since childhood when really NO HER ART STINKS. I'm being mean

^ ;D I feel mean sometimes too so can relate and do agree with you that the art is not good. I think the girls are really nice and supportive. I would probably be, too, but when I read about her art, I'm like "and that is supposed to be good?" But I guess I'm not into art anyway and don't know much about it so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about ;D

I haven't read this book for a while, but I might reread it soon. Even though Jessi wasn't my favorite baby-sitter, I always liked her story about Squirt's birth. I always got tickled at Becca, who said she wanted to call the baby "It".
Shannon's was realistic, too, when she was so desperate to have "cool" Sally White to be her friend. What teenager doesn't seem to want to be friends with the "in" crowd from time to time? I went through that myself, although my experience wasn't like Shannon's. I think that story has a good lesson: that you shouldn't lose who you really are just to fit in.

I loved Jessi's memory too and Shannon's! I thought Shannon's was a bit over the top with Sally demanding they like, not talk to the other girls and the other girls just lining up to be her temporary bff but maybe that's how 13 yr olds are. I can see them wanting to be friends with her but I dunno about Sally cutting them off from the others completely. Weird
