Maybe it was all that California heat having an affect on Mallory's brain.

I loved this book, it was one of the first, if not THE first BSC book I ever read, so it stuck with me pretty well. I liked the Stephie/Mary Anne plot...but Stephie kind of seemed like a Charlotte clone.

This was one of the first BSC books I read as well. I remember I really wanted to go to California after I read it!
As much as Mallory annoyed me in this book, thinking about it I can almost see how Mallory felt. She was an awkward 11 year old girl who felt like an ugly duckling. She wanted to change her looks but she took it waaaaaaaaay too far.

What was the name of the guy Claudia dated in this one? I was thinking Terry but then realized that was the name of Stacey's guy in Mystery Money. Was Claudia's boyfriend in this one Terry, too? I seem to remember her dating "Will' in a SS but think that was at Camp Mohawk. Can't keep track of the vacation romances.... ;D

^ Thanks. Glad to know I'm not losing my mind again I guess that's another one of the book's commonly reused names. If he was a dad he would be John.....;D

^lol. I agree with msstock. I'm not too bothered by Mal changing her appearance because it just seems very MALLORY-ISH to do that. I really want to re-read this one, but unfortunately it's one of 3 SSs I for some reason don't own. I'll have to borrow it from my sister because it's one of my favorites

I'm re-reading it at the moment and Mallory seems kinda dim throughout the book, particularly with the dying her hair and buying loads of make-up (which she bloody knew she couldn't show to her parents... what the hell did she expect to happen when she went back?!). Also she didn't know who Alfred Hitchcock was, what asthma or an inhaler was... I know that some people don't know... but it just seemed weird that it was Mallory who didn't.

^ Thanks, Gracie! I'm going to reread that one soon. Always liked Will ;D Agree liss about Mal seeming very dim. Jessi showed a lot of sense, though, I thought and gave her some good advice.

I'm lazy today, so I don't want to go back the other pages, but I think I mentioned it on another thread that Mary Ann cuts her hair, and she gets ostracized, but Mallory friggin' DYES HER HAIR BLOND and they don't say a thing.

^I think that can be explained pretty easily by jealousy. MA's new haircut is described as being very flattering and cute, and can you imagine Mallory's at-home dye job on her naturally red hair? Yikes.

OK, so here's something else I noticed in this book. The celebrities mentioned were Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Elaine Stritch, Cher, and Bette Midler...all gay icons.
Just sayin'.

^ aww well shoot. I'm Judy Garland obsessed!!!!! Maybe I should write a book... nah that would be too much like a research paper and having to cite all my resources *rolls eyes* even though i know most of the facts off the top of my head.. haha... did AMM write this one? I knwo she wrote Island Adventure. .. it's rumored she's gay... there was something posted on teh internet I dont know where that she confirmed it. I wasn't surprised... if she wrote it... maybe she threw it in there? I dont know when she stopped writing the SS though

Actually, while they don't ostracize her, aren't they kind of "wtf" about her dye job? I seem to remember Jessi "looking at her new blond friend" and not being able to say a word, and I think more than one of them tell Mallory that she "just doesn't look like herself"...?
