The fact that Stoneybrook is on the water is hardly ever mentioned in other books. The only other mentions I can think of is Claudia and the Lighthouse Ghost and a part in (I think) Mary Anne to the Rescue where she and Logan go to do homework or something on picnic tables by the water.

That's one book I haven't read so I'm not surprised I didn't know that!

This was the first book I read, but it didn't bother me as a kid. But now I REALLY do have a problem with the Ramseys leaving Jessi in charge for a whole weekend. She's mature and responsible, yeah. But she's far too young. I'd probably get Jessi to stay at Mal's and Becca to stay at Charlotte's - and send Squirt with one of them. That would be a logical thing to do. And I don't think Stacey's dad was being fair. Stacey's BEST FRIEND was missing and he didn't want her to cut her visit short? What if something had happened to someone he cared about the way Stacey cares about Claudia - and Dawn? Oh, and a note: This book took place before "Jessi's Baby-Sitter", because it was referenced there. Plus Aunt Cecelia hadn't moved in yet.

I finished this book yesterday and can't believe I ever said it was a favorite of mine. I still love the idea because the majority of the story does take place in Stoneybrook. Also, it was sort of an extended Snowbound where Claudia spent the night at the Perkins house and even Mal and MA stayed at the Pikes. I wish that part of the adventure had been better and more told, extended (without Jamie being sick)! an extra day. Of course, that there is never again any memory of this on the parts of the sitters or the kids is sad as it sure sounded like the castaways bonded. I didn't realize that Mal and her family were planning to sail on that same Saturday afternoon. I am guessing the weather stopped them? But if so they should have (maybe they did) recommend to the community center that they be on alert for the boats to come back. I did also think what a twist it would have been had somehow the Pikes boat ended up on 9:00 island too. Yes, I mean including John, Dee or both. I do overall enjoy the Pikes and that would have been cool reading about them in such a different way! My favorite moment is still Jamie announcing he can spell 6 words: mommy, daddy, Jamie, Lucy, love, and HELP. I do even all these years later yell at Claud and Dawn that no they are not bringing enough food! I did wonder this...Claudia brought 15 candy bars all Mounds (though I don't know that for sure. Mounds were the only name for candy she gave). There were: Claudia, Dawn, Jeff, Haley, Becca, and Jamie. We know Dawn would not eat the candy though I would have loved if she had in desperation! Anyway, was Claud really expecting (we know Jeff enjoys chocolate) 5 people to eat 3 candy bars each?! In a couple hour island visit. Even adding in a couple extra hours and snack for back and forth sail that seems like a lot of candy. But then my Grandma would have approved, she just lol would have brought some variety.

Haha, too funny about the candy. Yes, Claudia probably thought the others would eat 3 bars in that amount of time, since she probably does

Thank you, Boo Boo for the lol. I remember in one book Claudia had a bag of mini candy bars that she polished off while studying and/or trying to work out something unpleasant going on at that time. I know in Kristy and the Haunted Mansion Claudia tells Kristy that if she (Claud) had been there food would not have been an issue. Claudia needed to remember that in island packing! Though I know neither she nor Dawn expected an afternoon outing to be extended by a couple days.

I've never thought about this, but how is it possible that none of the Pikes got sunburned? They were out on the water for hours at a time, and depending on the book they are sometimes redheads. Mallory is specifically a redhead with freckles so I'm guessing she has to be pretty fair-skinned. My best friend is a redhead and we went to the beach a couple years ago and she was super careful not to get burned. I am pretty dark skinned and I don't burn easily (obviously I am still cautious because skin cancer doesn't look good on anybody) but getting burned is a constant worry of hers.

^Mal did get sunburned (didn't she)? at Shadow Lake in addition to the bugs? I am lighter skinned and do burn easily though not like MA in Sea City. I always even on more overcast days but on a little sunscreen. It did bother me that Stacey especially never seemed to put much of any on and would sunbathe for hours. I definitely think Ann and Co. should have been more careful about that message. ETA: I will read about Shadow Lake tomorrow (I have to finish a Boxcar library book tonight) for some "Gummity Gummity Woop" (Andrew song) cheer and refresh my memory.

^ I think (with her luck) she probably did get sunburned in Shadow Lake, but it seems to me like it should have been addressed in this one too. It might have made the circumstances seem more dire. Everybody is so worried about the missing boaters and they are working so hard, and for so long, that their bodies are suffering.

I think it just wasn't as big a deal back then. And Ann is from a tanning generation.

I think in a Sea City book (Boy-Crazy Stacey?) Mal got a tan rather than sunburned. Not too realistic for a pale redhead, but I think that was back before she was described that way. She seems to have gradually morphed from her "chestnut brown" hair in book #14 to having red hair.

^ I completely forgot about that, thanks. I guess if the Pikes can spend two weeks at the beach with no problems they probably won't burn after just a couple days on a boat :]

Mary-Anne looks really pretty on the cover! She's such a biotch in the book, though. Good grief! If I were Dawn, I would've been relieved to get stranded on an island, just to get away from her.

I know this has been discussed before but the glaring inconsistencies in the writing - Jessi being spelt Jesse and Dawn suddenly appearing in a conversation when she's stranded on an island - were really annoying. Blah to sloppy editing! A lot of credit goes to all the stranded kids, especially the younger ones. Not my favourite Super Special in any capacity...
