I think that out of the original five they could have had, Stacey would be out due to her diabetes, which left Claud, Dawn, Kristy and MA. Maybe MA and Kristy's reactions were too predictable? MA would have fallen apart (initially) and Kristy taking charge, which is in line with their personalities, and the writers wanted to see those things happen to difference characters?

The illustrations in my book is wrong, as well. It cracked me up, anytime I see it.

I just wondered what would Mary Anne's reaction be if the trip ended up in a more tragic note? She was a selfish idiot in this book, thinking only of herself and Logan. This is the only book that I actually hated Mary Anne and sympathized with Dawn.

I agree that Mary Anne was a bit of a jerk in this book. The cynical part of me says she would still have been selfish if someone had died ("my sister died", "this has been so hard on me", etc). But based on her characterization in most other books, I think more likely she would fall apart for a while but shove the feelings down to support whoever else is grieving.

How could Jamie Newton’s lovely parents send their 4 year old son out to sea on a boat skippered by a 13 year old who also happens to be the oldest person on board!!?? Just finished re-reading this one and in my opinion it’s the most far-fetched and worst BSC book I’ve read so far

Which is your least favorite parts of the book? Mine least favorite part is Dawn and Mary Anne's fight and Mary Anne being a self-involved shrew.

When the oldest is 13 years old. This is one of my least favorite super special of BSC.

So many thi gs wrong with this one even though it’s one of my favourites. Where to begin...
Who lets their four year old son go sailing with a bunch of kids and inexperienced sailors?
Who lets their eleven year old daughter stay home alone all weekend with their eight year old sister and baby brother? Aunt Cecilia was justified in her reaction.
Mary Anne being all dramatic over a missed message.
Bart being a jerk to Kristy
Mr McGill being a jerk to Stacey.

I could've done without the typical feminist Ann stuff when Haley was proud to see that the doctor who helped rescue them on the island was a woman. Ugh. The BSC series IS a feminist series. There's nothing wrong with a doctor who happens to be a woman. And since Ann is a feminist, the BSC books will reflect feminist themes. Maybe you'd be better off reading the Sweet Valley or the Fabulous Five books if feminism bothers you.

Mary Anne being all dramatic over a missed message. I don't blame her! True that she and Dawn both said things that they shouldn't have, but I'd be upset also if somebody failed to give me an important message. Logan actually was the one who acted stupid and over-dramatic in this book.

I wonder how would Island Adventure fare if a couple of totally different Baby Sitters and clients got shipwrecked instead of Cladia and Dawn?
My pick for the castaways are Kristy and Jessi, only because we didn't see them interact. I'm not sure about the replacement kids, though.

Kristy and Jessi are both totally level-headed, so they probably would have been fine! I feel like they could have been there with any combination of kids and still kept everything running smoothly. Mary Anne being stranded there (with any other sitter) would have been a more dramatic book because she would be freaking out, haha. I feel like she and Stacey are the only ones who couldn't have been chosen for this. I guess there could be a tense subplot of Stacey running out of insulin, but that would have been too over the top for me. I vaguely remember watching a movie in the 90s where Reba McEntire was stranded somewhere and an old man gave her some extra insulin, but it turns out he was a ghost? Even as a kid, that was too melodramatic for me.
But I do love the Claudia/Dawn pairing. They don't interact much but they were great together here. Their personalities complimented one another in unexpected ways.
[Edit]: I have now been digging through wikipedia and IMDB looking for this movie and I can't find it. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please let me know!

Lolol I can’t believe I didn’t see that Reba movie with my mom back then. I’ll have to ask her if she remembers it.

Is it perhaps someone other than Reba who looks similar?
