I thought Kristy's friendship with mr. Staples was a little weird. I guess I could picture a 13 year old talk to an older guy sometimes, but friendship..? spending a lot of time together?? I don't think so... ITA. It was a sweet story for a BSC book, but in real life, there would definitely be some raised eyebrows.

I think that's just another one of those inconsistencies. And maybe they do in the 80's (about lawyers becoming VP's? Like a firm that is so big that not everybody has to be a lawyer anymore? People can do administrative work, like what presidents and vps do? I dunno. My dad's a lawyer, and for awhile he had the title "vice president for legal affairs" (for a company that made dental implants, very exciting!). He was a partner in his own firm at the same time , but it could be that Mr. McGill worked in the legal department for a specific corporation or something instead of at a law firm? Or, you know, the inconsistency thing.

I think this is my favorite Super special of all time. Everything about it just seemed magical to me. I think I have reread this book a million times.

I like the vacation part but I always thought it was unfair Kristy got to bring two friends but none of her siblings did (though David Michael had Nicky). Or could they have been either too old (Charlie and Sam were too embarressed to invite a friend for a family vacation) or too young (the others' friends didn't want to leave home)? However, only a year later Karen and David Michael had friends join them in Shadow Lake. Did a year make that much of a difference? I really liked the part where Stacey and Mary Anne ask the Pike kids what they want to do.
"Go exploring," said Nicky. 'Go swimming," said Claire. "Go eat," said Byron, who's always hungry. "Play video games," said Adam. "Look at the ocean," said Mallory dreamily. "Find a candy machine," said Margo. "Read," said Vanessa. "Look for people wearing goofy bathing caps and laugh at them," said Jordan.
Did that crack anybody else up? I agree that it was annoying how Karen never got punished for charging a coke and a manicure to the room.

A coke and a manicure would run 15$ at most, and that's pretty small change for a MILLIONAIRE.

A coke and a manicure would run 15$ at most, and that's pretty small change for a MILLIONAIRE. I think the point is, she shouldn't have done it without asking first. But then, it didn't sound like she really understood exactly what she was doing anyway ("daddy never spends money on vacation") so to punish her would be a bit mean. There should have been a lecture, though.

I love that part! Also the mention of the triplets being caught and punished or something for making too much noise, running around the ship and knocking people over.

Yeah, but this is a millionaire who made the same daughter, at age seven, earn half the money to pay for her own new bike. And it wasn't as if her bike was fine and she just wanted a new bike because she saw a prettier one or something; her old bike had gotten too small for her so it would now actually be dangerous (and uncomfortable) to ride it. Although I don't recall if we ever found out if Watson ever found out what Karen had done. 'Cause a millionaire is probably pretty unlikely to notice an extra $15 charge on his bill for a cruise. As you said, small change.

I don't remember the coke situation, but if anybody should have gotten in trouble for Karen charging a manicure, it should have been Kristy. After all, she is the one who let Karen wander around the boat by herself. Did she really expect an unruly six-year-old to go straight to the room and back by herself without getting into any trouble?

I really like the triplets in this one. They're funny and nice to Nicky for once.

How does a second-grader earn enough money to pay for half a bike? I remember a LS book where Karen operates a very successful lemonade stand, but I don't think it was this one.
