"Wonder what R-rated movie Jeff saw when he accidently watched one. Were they pretty tame in the 80s? "
I think it really varied. Jeff probably saw one that wasn't so bad.

oh I was going to comment on the rated R movie thing too... I thought that was really weird. I wonder how Jeff "accidentally" saw one? Its funny to read about the girls all excited about the thought of seeing something bad... I don't think things like that would make it into later books, but it seemed realistic. I liked it. Especially when they're all disappointed they can't find one

LOL- I always laugh at that, because I never had any restrictions as to what I could and couldn't watch as a kid, so likely saw my first R rated movie before I was in the 1st grade (my grandmother and I would always stay up late and watch horror movies together- starting from when I was about 4).
That, and didn't Mary Anne comment in a later book (maybe Bad Luck Mystery) about watching the movie Halloween to get ready for the "real" day? Isn't Halloween rated R in the US?
Hmmmmm.....

^Mary Anne's favorite movie is also stated early in the series to be Sixteen f**k**g Candles. Hello, overprotective Richard? Slacking already >

" I cant believe they f**k**g forgot my birthday" haha. sixteen candles is a bit risque for mary anne. See in my head I justify this because I consider the actual move "Sixteen Candles" and the BSC version of the movie "Sixteen Candles" to be two very different movies.

Slacking already > He's not that slack though, was it in the California special where she mentions he won't let her watch Jaws? Good to know he's not about to let her get corrupted by man-eating sharks...

In Stacey and the Mystery of Stoneybrook Stacey mentioned that the creepy house reminded her of an Amityville Horror movie that she saw. I think she mentioned a few other horror movies that should definetely be R rated. Granted that book was a ghostwritten pile of poo, but at least sometimes the girls got to see bad stuff.
I thought Charlie or Sam said in one of the other super specials that they liked to hang out together and didn't really need to invite friends along. Maybe I'm making that up, I don't know. But they were pretty much best friends and were easily humiliated by their family, so it makes sense. Watson definitely paid for Claudia and Dawn to come along. How lame would that invite have been if he hadn't? You don't tell a couple of kids they can go on vacation with you if they can come up with $500 bucks or more. It's not like "Hey, you wanna go to the movies tonight?" and everyone pays their own way.

Also, something I thought was funny when I was rereading it was that Mary Anne and some of the Pikes are checking out the stuff on the cruise ship, and when they pass the casino Mary Anne is sad that a sign there says "adults only." Someone needs to write a fic in which Mary Anne has a gambling addiction. Sort of like that episode of The Simpsons where Marge does.

Apparently they were being brought along as guests, which to me implies he paid for them.

About Karen's manicure. Her nail polish was purple. At some point Watson should have noticed that his seven year old daughter had purple nails. Or not.

But I thought her favorite color was pink though.
