i have never been to nyc (i flew into newark once and i SAW nyc. does that count?) and i couldn't help thinking that i could have enjoyed it so much more if i had been to all the places they saw. in bsc in the usa they went to the san diego zoo, and i read that book just a few weeks after visiting that zoo, so it was really exciting.

I wish I could say it counts, but it doesn't cause it's a different state. I flew to Newark too to get to NYC one time.

The "roach" Dawn sees is confirmed by Claudia as a Three Musketeers wrapper. Aren't they silver? So Dawn saw a silver cockroach. Milky Ways and Snickers have brown wrappers, were 3M bars ever brown in the 90s? A little surprised that Claud and Mallory take sketch pads to their first class, but no pencils. There were stuffed animals in Laine's closet Mal explaining her mouse drawing sounded like something straight out of a Karen book.

And I forgot that Claud and Mal didn't take any pencils with them! Seems like those would be, well, important to take with you! And also forgot that super-cool Laine had - gasp - stuffed animals! Perhaps she got rid of them later when she got together with King. She'd probably be appalled by the stuffed animals that I, a grown woman, have on a shelf in one of my spare bedrooms.

sorry for the double post, but i just reread and something jumped out at me. when mac walked around the classroom and talked to the other students, couldn't claudia see that he critiqued everyone else too? i think it would have been pretty obvious that he wasn't just picking on her, and she couldn't honestly believe that he thought EVERYONE sucked. so why did she jump to that conclusion when he critiqued her? this never bugged me before but it got me thinking this time.

^ Maybe Claudia was too self-absorbed with being critiqued that she couldn't notice that other students were being critiqued as well.

^ that's what i'm thinking too, but it seems like such a huge jump. but then this is claudia, who assumed she found her birth mother just because everybody else she suspected answered the phone.

Did it ever mention in the book that Mac was critiquing everyone in the same way that he was critiquing Claudia? I can't remember.

I know everyone talks about how ridiculously unsupervised the BSC members were in various books, but I think this one takes the cake. In particular, when Kristy leaves flyers around the city to find a home for Sonny, and then a complete stranger calls her and asks 13-YEAR-OLD KRISTY TO COME TO HIS APARTMENT, and Mrs. Cummings is just like "Great, see you later!" My opinions of NYC are quite opposite of AMM's, so I wasn't terribly interested in the things they do in this book. However, I do love Chinatowns, so I did really enjoy reading about them hanging out there. Question: On the cover, do you think Claudia's necklace is a large Christian cross, or a large Egyptian Ankh? Or possibly just a large letter T? With Claudia's spelling skills, I'd want to know what she thought it stood for.

Good question. I always thought it was a big cross like what Madonna used to wear. It's so tiny on the cover, but it looks like it actually does have a loop on top like the second picture. Whatever it is, I'm sure Claudia picked it out because she liked the look of it, not for any religious reasons.

I always thought it was an ankh.
