I voted Mary Anne but I could see Kristy starting young while she has energy to keep up with them.

No one’s saying being a young parent means you don’t have it together. Mary Anne could marry her college sweetheart and have a child at 23 and she and her husband could provide for said child.

I could see Kristy starting young while she has energy to keep up with them. That I agree with...I see Kristy and Claudia being the first to have kids and Kristy having a huge family. No one's saying being a young parent means you don't have it together. Mary Anne could marry her college sweetheart and have a child at 23 and she and her husband could provide for said child. Possibly...I definitely see Mary Anne waiting until after uni and until she has a steady income before marrying or having kids, which could well be when she's twenty-two.

Can we just get rid of this idea already that people who have kids young are either married/conservative/intentional or out of control/irresponsible? "I can't see so and so doing XYZ because she's a good girl" is harmful and reductive. MANY women have children because they don't have other options. They doesn't make them careless. The single biggest factor in a woman's quality of life is whether she has kids and the system is rigged against women at every step of the way.

I hate the sex-shaming of women and girls. Especially foolish are some people claiming that Stacey would become pregnant as a teen because she was allegedly "wild" or an "out-of-control" mess or somehow a "bad" girl, then claiming that Kristy would stay a virgin until marriage because she was labeled a "good" girl. I actually have a university-age Mary Anne babysit for a very young mum in my fanfic and the mum is a very responsible fellow university student and I also have a fanfic in the BSC's senior year where a same-age cousin of Kristy's also has a baby largely because I see so few fanfics that depict young or single mums in a positive light. It's also a huge part of why I'm now working on a fanfic where the high-school age BSC help a pregnant Kerry out. So true that lots of women end up having children and/or marrying at young ages in many parts of the world and even in some areas of the States because their options are so limited. Sexism and gender discrimination is real and is still alive in many areas. Teen pregnancy is real and it's high time more Americans acknowledged it instead of hushing it and instead of shaming girls and to offer teen girls free access to non-judgemental resources and information, so they can make informed decisions. Real is also the denial of reproductive freedom for many women and girls. Too many young girls are denied access to birth control and to knowledge about how to avoid unwanted pregnancies, so that's often how they wind up pregnant, then denied access to either adoption or termination services. Not to mention that there is still economic and salary discrimination against women all over. So...I hear you there, Oldhickory. I'm so glad Ann Martin is a feminist and had the BSC as feminists. I see the BSC battling sexism in their adult lives, not just for themselves, but for other women all over the world.
