Just a short little drabble I had been working on. I was going to make this longer but I like where I stopped it.
He woke up to shaking and his blue eyes blinked up at his mother. Then his eyes slide over to the clock next to his head and read 6:30. Then he remembered last night the promise that he made to his mother. Dad had to go to work earlier than usual. That meant mom had to make breakfast and he had to wake Vanessa. She has to get up early because of how slow she can be. In the bed next to him Nicky snored.
“Can I make breakfast instead? I’ll get cereal ready,” he mumbled getting out of bed. His mother only sent him that look. Clearly she was going to figure out what to make. Grumbling, he rolled out of bed and quickly found a pair of jeans. Since it was starting to get cold out, he found a long sleeve jersey that may or may not be one of his brothers.
Nicky snored and Byron only shot him a look before going into his sister’s room. He just had to wake Vanessa and then go downstairs. Since Mallory left Vanessa was able to get herself ready by herself. She just needed to be woken up earlier enough. He kind of wished they were all still babies, at least they couldn’t control themselves at that age.
He tip toed into the bedroom and found his sister on the bottom bunk. He found her shoulder and started to shake her trying to wake her up. Vanessa stirred and looked up at him confused, before realizing what was going on. Byron waited around long enough to make sure she was fully awake and she had grabbed clothes to put on in the bathroom.
From down the steps he could smell pancakes from the kitchen. His mother would be putting out toppings for them to choose when everyone was ready. Since it was the first day of the new school year, pancakes perked everyone one up. That’s right, it was going to be his first day at Stoneybrook Middle School in the sixth grade. Vanessa in the fifth, Nicky in the fourth, Margo in third, and Claire in the first grade. I wish I could go back to the fifth grade though, things were a lot easier, because now it was going to be harder.
Since Mallory had moved away I’ve become the person that everyone goes to. I’ll help everyone with their homework. Then I have to do my homework sometime too. Jordan and Adam don’t want to help. They just want to play all the time. Except for the homework I don’t mind hanging out with my siblings.
He looked over at the breakfast table and that is a perk of getting up early. He could eat without getting interrupted and it was relatively quiet. Vanessa came downstairs followed by the others. He was almost done with his food already. He felt good for getting up this early.
