I wish they had different story for Kristy and Claudia. They already mention about the party, in Logan's story. It was useless to have Kristy's and Claudia's view of the party. It was like repeat of the same party. But in they're own view. Mr. & Mrs. Meanie, they couldn't think of summer romantic theme, instead of Valentine's theme.

It's funny because summer is such a naturally romantic time. People have more free time, they are out of the house more often, having adventures, meeting new people, etc. Maybe they could have done a beach theme or something instead.

^ That would've been better but I think that was the point, that the Means aren't very creative or in touch with the campers.
I read this one recently for the first time and I liked it better than the first SS, but it was definitely slow in some parts. I was disappointed that we didn't see them swimming or doing any other camp activities. It was more about the cabin-mates than anything else. I thought Logan's chapters were fun and his reaction to her silly note was actually rather sweet. I also liked that he still got her a flower even though the note clearly wasn't meant to be serious. I also liked that he mentioned that he hoped Mary Anne wouldn't be as nervous as she was at their first dance. That was a nice throw back. I also liked how his chapters kind of reflect Mary Anne's, it showed how similar they actually are.
I also liked Will, too bad he was just a SS romance for Claudia. He had potential.

I love that Mary Anne had actually went and tried to sneak over to the boys side of the camp. Oh my gosh it just makes me laugh and smile and I really like Logan's reaction to the letter. I feel like that their parts were the highlight of this book. Plus Mary Anne playing back that she wanted her ears pierced was hilarious with everyone's reaction.
Also I don't blame Charlotte in the slightest. I went to one sleep away camp as a kid and I hated it too. Me, Charlotte, and I think it was Nancy in Karen's Camp Out? could all just hang at out in the library over the summer.

One of my least favourites.
Why was Dawn trying to bring Heather out of her shell? Being a quiet person isn't a crime-I'm naturally reserved and if anyone tried to change me or bring me out of my shell I dig my heels in.
A meh book and won't waste anymore of my time with this one.
The third SS isn't much better.

I had just finished reading Summer Vacation yesterday and I have to admit that it was pretty underwhelming. I liked the premise though.
Charlotte would have done a lot better in day camp rather than sleepaway camp.

I think this book suffered from a sort of sophomore slump. BSC on Board was fun and exciting. It’s like they thought this is what they audience wanted to read about next (summer, camping), but the execution was poor. It would take awhile to hit that SS stride.

For me 4-7 is where the super specials were really cooking. Except for BSC Remembers, everything afterwards tries to one-up the book before it.
The team at Scholastic seems to think summer camp a quintessential childhood experience. I'm not surprised they chose it for the second SS setting.

Weird, I thought I commented on all the Super Special threads.
For some reason I love this one. It's my favorite Super Special (although California Girls! gives it a run for its money). Aside from Jessi and Mal, I think they all got good plots. I'm not sure which is my favorite- it's either Mary Anne, Claudia, or Stacey (I really relate to her fear of sickness).
I liked Dawn's chapters too, and how in depth she went in while describing the campers. I didn't like how she was judgy about Heather being so quiet. There's nothing wrong with wanting to just read. It's completely harmless. Also, the Iroquois comment always confused me. Of course, I love the chapter where her cabin mates get lost in the woods. For some reason, I eat up stories like that.
Every time Lyme disease is mentioned in the news, I think of this book. And I 100% relate to Stacey's paranoia.

I often see people posting about how this book made them want to go to Summer Camp, but not me! Uh-uh. Like Charlotte, I was a very shy child and would rather stay at home then having to interact with other girls my age and doing outdoor stuff. Shudder! I actually went to summer camp and did not like it. Here is my review of this Super Special. I also ranked the BSC handwriting so I'd be interested to see if anyone strongly agrees (or disagrees!) with me: thebookshelfofsara.blogspot.com/2021/02/sumer-camp-with-bsc.html

I also ranked the BSC handwriting so I'd be interested to see if anyone strongly agrees (or disagrees!) with me: thebookshelfofsara.blogspot.com/2021/02/sumer-camp-with-bsc.htmlOmg I have no life, idk why my reply is so long! Even though I love this book and it's not your favorite, I enjoyed your review. I mostly agree with the handwriting assessments, although all caps Newberry bothered me and I like Mal's kinda boyish handwriting (probably because it's very similar to mine lol. Although it's better because it's legible). Jessi's is pretty, but unbelievable for an 11-year-old girl. Claudia's is indeed bad, but I'm also an artist and have poor handwriting so I give her a pass. And yes, her spelling is hilariously bad. I really liked Claudia's plot in this and I loved Will. He actually is mentioned a couple times later on in passing. He's my favorite Claudia boyfriend for sure. I never really thought about her going away for 2 weeks while Mimi is declining so much, but perhaps she was kind of in denial or didn't think her death would happen so soon. But the conversation between her and Will is one of the deeper ones in the series and I think it's bold that AMM put that Will doesn't believe in Heaven or Hell, at least for the time (I love it though, as an atheist). I liked Dawn's chapters a lot, but I agree about her comments about Heather. I still really like Dawn at this point in the series, but yeah, this felt judgy. I'm thinking if this was rewritten now, this wouldn't be there. Perhaps in that time, introversion was less understood. I'm noticing upon reread that the sitters often push the shy kids to do outdoor and more social activities, and it really bothers me. So while Dawn is in the wrong here, it definitely isn't just her who pulls this kind of stuff. But I liked how much her cabin mates were characterized. Also, I know Dawn isn't strictly vegetarian, but what the heck did she eat at camp?! Stacey had trouble getting a diabetic-friendly meal (I agree with your annoyance with this), so idk what Dawn did, especially with, say, meatloaf. I'm guessing she traded the meatloaf for, like, carrots with someone else? Sort of wished that was addressed, could've been entertaining. At this point, though, she isn't as militant about healthy eating. And they do serve veggie burgers a couple of times I suppose. Stacey was miserable but I love her plot for some reason. Is that weird? I guess it's because I can relate to her. Perhaps she caught a cold and impetigo because of diabetes giving her a weaker immune system. Poor girl. She's tougher than I would have been, though. Nonie is an interesting character and I agree that she is pretty mature for a 6 year old. Mary Anne's chapters are so entertaining in this one. Best Super Special Mary Anne plot imo. Early series Mary Anne is actually really funny. Best Logan Super Special chapter too. I didn't enjoy Jessi and Mal's plot as much as the others (just didn't enjoy the play part), but their cabin mates were absolutely awful. I felt so bad for them getting stuck with that racist girl. I felt bad for Kristy too. I was a tomboy growing up (well, still am actually) and had so many people bug me about it, saying "You can be pretty if you want." (OUCH!) Also, sharing makeup is super unhygienic, ew. Early series Kristy did seem to wish she was more girly, though, at times, even though she didn't enjoy staying dressing up. I never wanted to be more girly. I do feel like deep down she kind of struggled a bit with her appearance because of all the comments and it makes me feel bad for her, whether she wanted to be more girly or not. This is why I don't mind her being less girly later on in the series... perhaps she realized it just isn't for her and that's okay.
