Was this written when Billy Ray Cyrus first became popular? That's the only reason I can think of as to why people would find it fashionable.....even on women. He is the only one who was ever able to pull it off though.
That said, I had a mullet when I was younger and was so thankful when the thing grew out years later. I don't know what possessed me to get one at eight.
As for the eight year olds dressing like that---it scares me but makes me thankful my Sunday School girls (10-12) dress appropriately. (to the point where one almost cried when her bra strap showed, my heart broke for her because I remember being embarrassed at that age too. She even apologized to me for having it show, which I thought was sweet.)

^ I hope you praised your SS student for her modesty. They need to hear it as much as possible, that showing your body isn't the thing to do.

i don't think there's anything wrong with showing your body. i live in miniskirts. that being said, for those who have yet to reach high school it's not the best thing.

Agree, Greer, about the younger girls. I was glad when I went shopping the other day and saw the little girl clothes seemed a bit better (in my opinion - they reminded me of more the clothes from "my" era ;D) I had forgotten about Billy Ray Cyrus having the mullet but know it was really big in the BSC books. Carolyn Arnold had one and so did Haley Braddock. Maybe Karen started the trend ;D

The clothes I wore as a child were totally fug. I'm glad my niece doesn't have to wear junk like that! I agree with greer, once you are high school aged there's nothing wrong with showing a bit more, provided it's tactful rather than skanky. I too live in mini jean skirts and tank tops, I mean I live in AZ, it's HOT.

I did, I sat with her and told her I understood how she felt. She hugged me and thanked me, it was sweet, I really bonded with those kids. Unfortunately grad school keeps me from committing this year, but next year I'm hoping to do it again.

I too live in mini jean skirts and tank tops, I mean I live in AZ, it's HOT. agree. Although for some reason all the stuff that I wore seems to be coming back (albeit more tailored and less ill-fitting. I hope no child ever has to wear stirrup pants with a crotch down to their knees again [in all honesty I hope no child ever has to wear stirrup pants again, but I have a feeling that they will, seeing how the trends seem to be going). Anyway, I don't know much about fashion but a general rule I try to follow is not to show a ton of leg and midriff at the same time. If I'm wearing a short skirt I wear a shirt that covers more and vice versa. I'm sure if cleavage where even remotely an issue for me that might factor in somewhere too. And that's in general, I stop worrying about fashion rules if it's hot.

every girl at my university wears leggings without a shirt or skirt that covers their butts... it's so gross-looking.

I see girls in leggings and ballet flats at my school all the time. Claudia would be proud.

Leggings, like *most* things, have a place- primarily the ice rink.

Boy did I feel sorry for Karen in this book... the last thing she needed was Hannie being so mean to her!

^ I agree. I really felt for her, too. Hannie was just downright mean when she was already feeling bad and insecure. That's the time when you need your friends the most, I think. It hurts when they're not there for you....

Did anyone else notice that when Karen was thinking about new names for herself that she included middle names? Makes you wonder again about Karen having a middle name. ;D
