I re-read this probably like 100 times. I like this book. Hannie was too mean, @ Karen.

It's been quite awhile since I last read this book. But it still amazes me how her mother NEVER had an issue with Karen's hair. I would think most mothers and fathers would be mortified if their 7 year old daughter had a mullett. It seemed like only Karen's classmates though it looked weird. (I can't remember if there was any reaction from the Big House though).

If I was Karen's mom I would have asked Gloriana why in the hell did she give Karen a haircut she didn't ask for? Didn't Karen have a picture with her of the cut she wanted? It's been a long time since I last read this one, but I seem to remember Karen had a clear idea of what she wanted.

^ I think Karen was too intimidated to tell Gloria about the picture with the haircut she wanted.

Also, I think Lisa is pretty easy-going. I am sure she knew that it was pointless to make a big fuss about something that couldn't be changed. Besides, she has to deal with Karen's antics all the time.

She also probably didn't want to make Karen feel worse. It's one thing to get an ugly haircut. It's another to have it pointed out in front of you. Unless Lisa had Karen and Andrew wait in the car while she yelled at Gloriana I think it was better to say nothing.

I hope at least Lisa called when Karen and Andrew were out of earshot and that was not part of the book. Glorianna's House of Horror.

This is one of my favourite LS books. I don't think that Glorianas is a bad hair salon. In fact, it looks pretty 80s trendy and I imagine it as a salon often visited by teenagers or young people. This book now, in my adult life, reminds me of my friend (who is now 34 so she would technically be around the same age Karen is now if she had aged). Anyway, my friend's mom is a hairstylist and she said that when she was young, her mom experimented with trendy styles on her which she hated. I'm sure she had the exact same haircut as Karen did.
Although it looks somewhat horrible, this cut was pretty trendy in the hair world. (Sometimes what's trendy in the hair industry and on everyday people is totally different.)
One of my favourite parts is Karen's names for herself. Like Chantal Chantilly (or whatever) always makes me laugh. Hannie was really bitchy but seven year olds really act like that sometimes. I love how Ann can understand the reactions and feelings of kids, often fickle.

It was published in 1990 and your friend would have been 29.
Doesn't Kim Kardashian sound like a name Karen would have come up with? LOL

LOL If it was published in 1990 then the friend would have been 12. Karen would go by Kimberly, but really if she picked any of the Kardashian names I think it would be Khloe. (I just noticed typing that out that Khloe doesn't even look like a real name. It's a couple of random letters thrown together.)

I think my friend was around 11-12 in 1990, as sparklymouse said. So not exactly Karen's age, but around the same age group to have had that haircut that Gloriana gave her.

Yeah a little bit older then....
Maybe Khloe would have fit too, or a variation of Kim

Would she be able to "keep up"?
