If they were caught though, I can imagine lots of hurt feelings and losing some clients. I don't think Jenny would appreciate being called a brat. Which is why the BSC kept the notebook safe and private. But later, on they'd all have a good laugh about the notebook. The BSC series isn't a Boy Talk/SVH soap opera anyway.

This was a plot to the show in the 90s! But I don't think the kids ever exactly read the notebook, they were just outraged that the sitters were writing about them. I remember them storming into one of the sitters' houses chanting WE WANT TO SEE THE NOTEBOOK! WE WANT TO SEE THE NOTEBOOK!
Like someone else explained, Matt lip-read and found out about the things the sitters were talking about. But they didn't know, so they assumed someone had read the notebook. Later on Dawn explains to the kids that the sitters use the notebook to keep a record on their clients so they know more about them and how to properly babysit them.

I remember that one...the books didn't have that one, though. Glad Dawn explained it to them...one thing I love about the BSC is that they never talked down to the kids and always leveled with them.
