Does anybody remember Uncle Joe in Mallory and the Ghost Cat? He's meant to be this really cute, kind and fun uncle/relative of Mr Pike who Mr Pike had some good times with many years ago before the Pike kids came along. Now living in a nursing home, he's recently been in touch with Mr Pike again and is even invited to stay for a few days at the Pike household. The Pike kids are super excited to see him for the first time after hearing how amazing he is by Mr Pike. But when he comes to visit he's very different to how he was described. He's not kind or funny. He's standoffish and moody to everyone and his attitude never changes. It's a nasty shock to the Pikes and Mallory and some of the Pike kids even get a little scared of him.
I remember this character struck a chord with me because something very similar happened to me when I was in high school. But it was a slightly different scenario. I got back in touch with a girl I'd been briefly friends with when we were 8/9 years old in primary school 5 years back. She'd been sooo sweet and friendly when I knew her back then. Now she'd got a scholarship in a private high school while I was at a local comprehensive. I thought she'd be the same, even after all these years. But she was standoffish and rude in a similar way to Uncle Joe. It was a shock and it left its mark, even if you can laugh about it years later.
Has anybody read this book and remembered Uncle Joe? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Getting in touch with an old relative/friend after a long time and them being completely different to how you remembered them? Sometimes it can work out the opposite way. Sometimes people who weren't so nice are suddenly much nicer. That's a lot more of a pleasant experience.
