I'm glad that Karen didn't get her birthday party with both families. The reason why I say that is because many many kids (divorced or not) can relate to Karen's situation. Not everyone's family gets a happy ending, unfortunately.

It is unrealistic, and I'm glad she spoke to Nannie about it and realized it on time or she would have missed out on what each family had planned for her. The circus sounded great.

Going to the circus never appealed to me even as a kid, but I liked hearing about the "fancy" flashlights I love the little house party so much. And Karen's class celebrated her birthday for over an hour at school. When I was that age we sang to our classmates on their birthdays, but I think that was it.

I went through a "circus" phase briefly and liked clown's makeup, but was barely paying attention by the time I made it to a circus at 7 though that could have had to do with my low attention span.
I also love the little house dinner party and all it's descriptions though I really think she could have chosen something more delicious for her birthday menu than just burgers...

I don't even think school boards would allow this. If you think about it, let's say there's 20 kids in a class (which is low balling it) and 1 hour was spent on each kid, that would be 20 hours total. That's a lot of birthday celebrating!!! That just goes to show how special Karen was bwaha.

At our preschool we read a birthday book that's four pages long and if moms brought sweets we have the kids sing at beginning of snack time and serve them then.
And at the elementary school I interned at in very low poverty neighborhood the teacher just made an announcement and let child choose a piece of candy and special thing (in her case a long eraser that looked like a pencil) from a box labeled "birthday"... lasted three minutes tops...but schools like that the parents can Seldom afford to put dinner on the table, let alone thirty cupcakes.

My niece turned six yesterday and got to wear a cardboard crown, and her class sang her a song and they ate a treat. Much more in line with the length of a school day, although, to be fair, Karen was in second grade for like a decade so more field trips and longer parties wouldn't have as big of an impact.

I just re-read and to me the very worst, saddest part was how everyone (by everyone I particularly mean Watson and Lisa) automatically thought the worst of Karen. Once they did that, they each assumed all Karen wanted was monetary gifts. They did indeed "forget" Karen, their daughter. :'/ I have had the experience, many times, of being in the position both as a young child and even as an adult of someone in my life who truly should love me unconditionally think the worst of me rather than hear what I have to say and how I truly feel. The other thing that stood out more for me this re-read is that anytime Karen referred to the two parties, they were labeled "Daddy's Party" or "Mommy's Party." Ann sure got that right :/ Sure these events were meant for Karen but they sure didn't seem to be about her. As for Karen going to Nannie, I wanted to hug her (K) and really applaud her courage for seeking out some help and a listening ear. As others of you have already said, Nannie had absolutely no business making sure Karen knew in no un certain terms (that was how it read to me anyway) that there was no way her parents would agree to spend her birthday together so she, (K) should figure out something else. IMO, Nannie should have thanked Karen for trusting her to come to and then after listening, suggested that Karen needed to express her feeling to her Dad (and Mom). Nannie could have also offered to stand by Karen while she talked with Watson. Anything other than take it upon herself to decide how Watson and Lisa, Seth and Elizabeth would react. Karen was the biggest "adult" in this entire book and the person who least should have been. As always, I was so happy Seth and Lisa, at the end, came inside the Big House. I am not a rat fan but I thought it was also so sweet how Andrew and Seth made Emily, Jr, a playground. I loved when Karen told us that was her favorite gift. I hope one day, she told Andrew and Seth, too.

I agree it was humble of Karen to say she loved Emily's gift the best after getting all the things she wanted, and used to wonder if she kept the drawing up for the books after

when I was in Christian school. The kids brings treats for everyone in the classroom. We sing Happy Birthday. Eat the treats. (Sometimes with punch.) Then, go outside to play. If, their was time left. We finish our schoolwork or cleanup the classroom. Sadly, I couldn't bring treats for my birthday. Cause, my birthday was August 15th. My Birthday is in the summertime. The school didn't start after labor day.
