Was it ever revealed in other books that Watson smoked cigars? I don't remember ever reading about and can't imagine his family supporting his habit, especially after his heart attack.

I never heard about the cigar funerals! Now that I think about it though, it's strange that none of the parents smoked. I understand that Ann probably didn't want to promote cigarettes or anything of the such, but growing up I had a lot of friends who had smoking parents, and it's kind of odd that it was never mentioned besides the cigar funeral.

Ha! I forgot about the cigar funeral. That was awesome!
Some people only smoke cigars on special occasions. Maybe he just didn't smoke them often enough for Kristy and Karen to bother mentioning them.

^ Agree. I think they were mentioned in a few books, too. Maybe Kristy and Mr. Mom or others that talked about Watson's heart problems. Was Fashion Victim before or after that one?

I actually read that on this site. I can totally see Elizabeth and the family giving him a hard time about smoking them, unless he sneaks them or something.

the sigar funeral sounds hilarious! too bad I never got to read that book!
as for Karen's Birthday, I think it's my favorite Karen book. I could relate to her and maybe she was bratty (as usual) but she meant really well and really just wanted her family together. They just didn't understand. Aww, poor kid!

I also felt really bad for Karen in this one (even though I fortunately can not relate). I'm just getting ready to reread on my birthday on the 7th. Maybe I should start making a really long list ;D

Just reread (for my birthday ;D) and the adults really made me mad as always. If my kid made a list with 212 items on it, my first thought wouldn't be to yell at her and call her a spoiled brat but maybe to discuss it with her because she might have some reason for randomly writing down things from the catalog. I really was disappointed in Kristy too when Karen called her for support and she didn't even want to listen. At least Watson did try a little at the end but poor Karen still didn't get one party and then they had the nerve to think she was greedy for wanting that. I think they were the ones who were being petty and selfish. Poor Karen. I am glad that the separate parties went well for her, at least (and that Scott and Hannie "made up" ;D)

^I also thought it strange that Watson had the nerve to tell Lisa that she's raising a brat who would want 212 things! Who's the freakin' millionaire here? It would be more likely that Watson spoil Karen (though he doesn't) than Lisa, since they live in that "little house" and all. ;D

Sorry, I know this has already been mentioned, but the fact that the parents couldn't put aside their differences for a couple of hours just for Karen's birthday always made me mad too. I mean, Stoneybrook is a small town and all four parents must have run into each other sometime or another. I'm pretty sure they don't just ignore each other. It's not like Karen wanted them to spend days together....just a few hours. I know they don't enjoy being together, but they can't just ignore each other for the rest of their lives. Well, that's the end of my little rant.

I just thought of another point on this book ;D Did anyone other than Nannie really say that the birthday shouldn't be celebrated together "because it would make Seth and Elizabeth uncomfortable"? I know Watson and Lisa were against the idea but am not sure if either of them ever said it was for that reason or for others. I think that Nannie was kind of overstepping her bounds on telling Karen that. If Seth and Elizabeth really did feel that way, they should have been the ones to say. It wasn't really Nannie's place to speak for them.

My dad pointed out another thought on this subject of Nannie in this book last night. He just read this one (it was sitting out and he didn't have a book but is always curious to know what I am going on about and this book has been one of those things ;D) and said that Nannie - maybe even without knowing it - was protecting her turf by keeping Watson and Lisa apart. She maybe felt like she was not only protecting her daughter (he said that's coming from a "dad's perspective" ;D) but also like she was guarding her place in the "Big House." That makes sense because Karen's parents getting back together would mean Nannie saying "bye bye" to the Big House....;D
