I had no idea my little Watsona suggestion would be so popular. I think it's actually pretty tame compared to what people name their kids these days.
I like this idea much more than hyphened last names. That way you can use the mom's name and the kid can decide how much they want to use it rather than sticking them with an unusually long last name.

i agree. no offense to anyone with a hyphenated name but i think they're weird. what do you do if you marry someone else with a hyphenated name?

i agree. no offense to anyone with a hyphenated name but i think they're weird. what do you do if you marry someone else with a hyphenated name? Good question. I have a hyphenated name (my husband does not) and if and when we decide to have children I'd like them to take my husbands name. I don't even really LIKE my maiden name but it's very unique (my Great Grandpa made it up) and I wanted to keep it with me. My mom had a very unique last name before marrying my dad and intended to hyphenate hers until she realized that two long made ups names hyphenated would be a horrible thing to do to a child (thanks mom...) Sorry that was no help concerning you initial question... If it helps, my SIL is from Bolivia. Everyone has two names there. If I remember correctly, how she explained it was you have your mom's and your dad's last names (Like if your mom's last name was Smith and your dad's was Lane your last name(s) would be Smith de Lane) Then when you get married you keep your dad's last name, drop your mom's and take on your husbands so lets say in this scenario your husband's last name was Lopez your last name would now be Lane de Lopez. So maybe it would work like that? Though the whole thing IS kind of sexist, keeping only the male last names, and often (but not always) the reason people hyphenate is because they want to avoid sexism.

^ Agree. ;D I do understand the cultural differences that cause it but personally wouldn't hypenate (wouldn't give my kid the name Davis or Emerson, though, either ;D)

it just makes family trees so confusing I agree. That reminds me of one book, I think it was Mary Anne and the Secret of the Attic, where Karen is doing a family tree and has no idea where to put Elizabeth on it. ;D

I think it sounds kind of pretentious for a boy though.

lmao. I think Karen's middle name would be something like Danielle. She would think it was VERY fancy. Oh man, I could totally see her saying in every book, "Hi, I'm Karen Danielle Brewer!" lol. I like the middle name Danielle though, it's much better than my middle name (Lynn).

I don't share mine with anyone. I'm surprised actually. My middle name is Marie, it's like one of the most common middle names used in the 80s (along with Lynn and Anne I would guess).

Mine is Lynn too, sweetvalley. I always thought it was cool I shared it with a BSC member, but wished it could have been somebody I liked better than Claudia.
