I'm sure I spelled leprechaun wrong hehe but there was a few things that bugged me in this book.
1. Why was there no pc explanation for why Mr. O'Casey was short? Why did the adults just let Karen and Andrew assume he was a "lepicon" (as Andrew said)? When the adults found out the kids thought that they should have explained a little about dwarfism. Instead Seth and Lisa brush it off with a "he's not a leprechaun it's just a story" explanation.
2. Karen really needs to stop blaming others for her brattiness. I'm sorry but blaming Mr. O'Casey for the pot of gold thing? Sure she can blame him for telling her a story but Karen had only herself to blame for wandering so far away from home without notifying anyone. Goodness I still leave my parents a trip plan when I go hiking just so someone knows where I am in case of an emergency and I'm almost 20 years older than her but I think seven is old enough to know that you shouldn't be wandering off without permission. Karen asked for permission to go across the street to Nancy's all the time but this time she doesn't. Although it is Karen and she was probably thinking greedily of all the gold for herself.

I felt Karen had every right to be punished for what she did. I understand her excitement but she should have known better at that point. I still tell my parents where I am going, even though I am 20 years old. I feel it is safe if somebody knows where I am.

That guy was a dwarf? I didn't catch that. People shrink as they get older. Maybe he was just a short man.
I think I am the exact opposite of Karen. She gravitates towards creepy things. I run from them. Leprechauns are a bit like tiny clowns with gold instead of face paint.

After learning that witches and mermaids and who knows what else aren't real, she believed he was a leprachaun? Oh Karen. I did enjoy this one, but I thought she would give the dog to the neighbours, who were lonely without their grandchildren. Oh well.

I think that Karen deserved to get punished for not telling anyone where she was going. I know she wanted to find the gold but she should have told everyone where she was going. After all, something bad could have happened.

I thought this book was cute. I liked how the book started off a bit magical, with the idea of leprechauns and magic. Karen running after the pot of gold just might be one of my favourite Karen moments of all-time!
I did not like the ending. If the author wanted Mr. O'Casey to have Lucky, they could have done a better job of putting it into the story. Maybe they could have brought Lucky to the parade and they could have met there. I guess I did not like the letters at the end... seemed a bit random and rushed. Why would Mr. O'Casey mail a letter to Karen that was, like, one sentence long? I guess that was my picky writer side coming out.
Edited to add (on May 26, 2011) I just read this book again. It's another example of how I love Lisa and Seth. I think they're great parents and people. I admired how they wanted to help out Lucky by keeping him, even when it was an inconvenience to them as they already had 2 pets.

I enjoyed this book especially for Lucky and the unexpected scene where Karen ran into Kristy and Emily. I was disappointed that Karen never asked her dad about keeping Lucky nor did Lisa or Seth at least try to spend a little more time with Rocky and Midgie in hopes of reassuring them of their place in the home. One thing I wasn't sure of is where is Stoneybrook Playground? Or is that simply the play area at or near Stoneybrook Academy? Carle is the only Playground other than at SES mentioned in the BSC books. It almost sounded like SA was closer to Watson's than Lisa's so maybe the playground was nearer to the big house? It was cool that Karen and others help build it. Virgo, I agree about Lucky. Also Mr. O'Casey's hand-writing almost made my eyes spin. I'm sure he was a perfectly nice guy but it came across as odd that he even knew Karen's mailing info and would write her. He should have talked with the Druckers and/or Lisa and Seth first. IDK, maybe I'm just still ever wishful that Sonny had had a happier ending in Stoneybrook so that now translates into Lucky. ETA: I hope everyone had a Happy St. Patrick's Day today.

Bwahaha, zoar! I *just* read this today for St. Patrick's Day and was just about to comment on it and noticed that you just did. Good timing!
I think Stoneybrook playground is Carle Playground -- or at least that's what I assumed. Isn't it near where Logan and Alan Gray live?
Again, the horrible rushing of the plot really bothered me again. But I realize this book was written for kids in Grade 2 and they could care less about that. I just wish that Patrick getting Lucky was written into the last few chapters instead of being shown through the random set of letters.

^^Patrick getting Lucky sounds like it should be the title of a fanfic about Kristy's dad, lol.
I think Stoneybrook Playground is the one that was built in LS #20, Karen's Carnival. Lisa was in charge of the fundraising for it and the description in the book said it was near Watson's.

^ Yes, you're right. Now I remember Karen mentioning helping build the playground in this book when she passes it.

Thanks Scrounge. I'll have to see if that bookstore has Karen's Carnival next time I'm there and at least give it a quick read. Do you remember where it is? I'm just trying to still picture how far from the Little House Karen rode her bike.
Virgo, I thought Carle playground was somewhere near Claudia? I could be thinking that because of Mother's Day Surprise. All future trips to the playground seemed to be at SES. I think, maybe Brenner Field is near Logan. I just looked in the Complete Guide. From it, Logan lives practically adjacent to Carle and far away from Brenner Field. Rosie lives near BF. Stoneybrook Playground (maybe because it is a LS spot) is not listed. Stoneybrook Academy looks maybe two streets over from Watson's while Lisa's house is closer to Brenner Field across town. So if Karen rode past the big house she really went Far! I'll have to double check later. O/T to this, does Kristy ever take Emily bike riding again? I just never pictured a baby seat on a kids' (teenagers) bike before.

^ I had picked this off the shelf a little while ago because I wanted to read about Karen and the rainbow again and love Lucky the dog. ITA with what you said Kylie. Over the weekend I had read Karen's Christmas Tree," one of my very favorite LS Holiday books that features the Druckers. The idea of Lucky going to them in this book sounds extra sweet now and I wish that had happened. I also still think Karen could have asked her dad and Elizabeth not to mention (to our knowledge) Nancy! We know according to "Karen's Spy Mystery," the Dawes at one time had a dog named Percy so the family did have that experience and weren't allergic to (Mr. Gianelli--though didn't Bobby have a dog at one time)? or afraid (Mrs. Barnes--who is she and also a neighbor named Harris)? of dogs like some of the neighbors were Karen did ask. I hope Mr. O'Casey and Lucky were happy. I do admit that I wish the dog had gone to a regular neighbor so we would have heard of him again. ETA: Sorry for the double post and I also agree with you Sparklymouse that if I think about Leprechauns being similar to clowns...I'd probably prefer to keep a distance, too. I'll take Bob the unicorn instead. I do love the idea of that and do believe in flying horses. Leprechauns not so much simply because they tend to be associated with the idea of luck, something I no longer believe in at all. To end positively, my dad's bff loved all things St. Pat's Day and enjoyed the idea of "the little green people."

The Green Thumbs sounds like a chill senior citizen group. I wonder what a garden club really does. Gossip about flowers?
I didn't catch that Mr. O'Casey was a little person the first time that I read this. Obviously he was. He was Andrew's size. Karen had seen The Wizard of Oz a million times. I would think that she would be more knowledgeable. If I was Lisa I wouldn't have liked this adult man sending my kid gifts in the mail and writing her letters.
I'm a very overprotective pet parent, so I wouldn't have just let Lucky in the house like that. Take him to the vet, get him checked out, maybe introduce everyone in the back yard first. It was kinda hot thinking of Seth running downstairs with a baseball bat, lol. Then Lisa followed with a skateboard, and Karen grabbed an umbrella. I hope their house was never really burglarized because they wouldn't survive.
A five block limit sounds pretty far away to me. Karen's bike trip across town was actually scary. She could have gotten lost in the woods. I've tried finding the end of a rainbow before but barely made it over the hill behind my house.
