Aw, they told the funny Mimi stories. Lol, Mimi, her husband, and Ben Brewer having a threesome love triangle up in heaven.
Alright Janine!

This was such a good episode. We got meaningful moments, especially the tea ritual, and also funny moments like the sudden mood swing when Janine brings up the biker bar. We already had Dawn talking about how she could date anyone on the gender spectrum, so I wasn't expecting a second major character to be gay. I didn't get gay vibes from Janine ( sparklymouse you called it like 5 episodes early) because she barely seems to like anyone, but it explained why Ashley was around all the time. I had been wondering.

^I actually read it as Claudia was wondering in the new girl episode. That part at the end when she asked Janine if there was anything she wanted to tell her made me guess.

Aw, they told the funny Mimi stories. Lol, Mimi, her husband, and Ben Brewer having a threesome love triangle up in heaven. Alright Janine! Karen’s line was wildly inappropriate (too soon for comic relief) but I guess kids do say the darndest things and I’ve heard adults say some strange things at funerals. Perhaps Book Kristy would have taken Karen aside and spoken to her about being more sensitive to others’ feelings? Even though Karen was a child, that kind of comment would upset me if it was my grandmother and I think it took them all off guard, especially Claudia. I’m obviously a bit sensitive and I only ever read this book once or twice, so sad. 😢 Other than that, I really liked Karen in this series and her fascination with her family tree was great. The other Mimi memories were lovely and fun. I enjoyed the portrayal of Japanese culture and Janine’s character really developed.

Well, Karen only told Kristy that at their house. She wasn't at Claudia's memorial. Kristy was the one who decided to re-tell Karen's story.

True 😊 Karen reminds me of those articles where people tell us the creepy things their kids have said. I’m glad they featured her a bit as she was a huge character and had her own book series. Made sense.

I was actually underwhelmed at this episode. I was expecting it to be very emotional and that I might shed a few tears, but Mimi was dispatched so efficiently and when Claudia woke up in the morning, her parents didn't look like someone had died. They just left Claudia and Janine standing there after delivering the news. Come on, the girls have just lost their beloved grandmother, someone give them a hug!
It improved towards the end though, with the sharing of Mimi memories.

I know the episodes are short and can only fit so much in, but any sort of reaction from Mary Anne would have been nice.

I loved the inclusion of the funny Mimi stories and that they were fairly close to the funny stories in the book, because it's such a good part of the book. I also liked them changing it to a biker bar! (It was a Howard Johnson's in the book, which would not work today -- I read a while ago on Atlas Obscura that there is one remaining Howard Johnson's restaurant, though.) I also thought Janine might be interested in Ashley when I watched Claudia and the New Girl, and I also thought Claudia was hinting at that when she asked Janine at the end of the episode if there was anything she wanted to tell Claudia, but I guess Claudia wasn't actually wondering that since she seemed surprised in this episode. Congrats to Janine; Ashley is so much cooler than Jerry.
