I'm sorry to hear about your aunt, aln. She'll be in my thoughts and prayers. ...on the desk note, i think the main reason most of my classes moved desks was because our desks were too messy and had too much stuff in them, so it was just easier for us to drag it across the room..but I've also been in classes where we move our stuff instead of the desks, so I think it just depends on the teacher.

I'm sorry about your aunt aln. I hope she feels better soon, and her eye heals well.
RE: DESKS -- The schools I went in grade school usually had us move our desks, because we had a lot of stuff we kept in them. We didn't do the cubby thing after kindergarten. Once in a while, someone would have to move their stuff -- but they usually stayed in from recess to do that, and it was rare. Most of my teachers had us change seating arrangements on a fairly often basis -- sometimes we sat in rows, sometimes in a semi circle, sometimes we were moved into groups of four or five.

^ Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers. I know she'll be appreciative to know that so many people care, too. I think a lot of teachers didn't want to have to hear us scraping the desks across the floor. ;D Kids liked moving our stuff better than moving the desks, anyway, (though we did it both ways) because that took longer and involved more opportunities to goof off. ;D

what i thought was weird is that they had an empty desk in the front row--or did karen switch with someone? and then ricky came to the front too...

Sorry to hear that aln. I hope your aunt gets better. Ditto . Going back to the whole art thing, my school had art in a cart too from 1st-2nd grade and then the art teacher got her own room so reading about art in a cart in this book didn't phase me at all.

Not only did we have an art cart, but the music teacher would push a (very) small piano from room to room when she needed it. The art, music, and gym teachers were the same for the whole elementary district. They would travel from school to school each day so they brought their supplies with them. (Well, the piano stayed at our school. That would be the crappiest job ever to have to drag a piano around town all day, every day.)

We had a music cart, too, but don't remember the piano being moved. It probably was, though. I'm surprised I can't remember. ;D Greer, there were two switches - first Karen and someone and then Ricky and the third person (Natalie remained). That's how I remember it, at least.

My mom was a student teacher in the 70s and she had to push a full upright piano stacked with books on top to every class. No wonder she decided to become a librarian instead. ;D

Did anyone else think it was strange that Ms. Colman made all the glasses-wearers sit in the front row? I've never heard of a policy like this before, and I have to say I think it's unfair and nonsensical. A lot of kids consider it a privilege to be in the back of the room, particularly beside their friends like Karen was. I'm surprised no one protested being relocated. If someone had a vision impairment that couldn't be corrected with glasses, then it might be logical, but that wasn't the case here.

We discussed it a little in a different thread, but yes, it was a dumb policy. The kids with glasses should have been able to see as well as the other kids and therefore shouldn't have had to sit two feet from the chalkboard. I have crappy eyesight and needed glasses for a few years before I actually got them. I had to sit up front, and it really annoyed the teachers because I was quiet and well behaved and they would have liked to stick me in the back where I was less supervised. Basically I was taking up space that one of the trouble makers could have been in.

My favourite part was when she made the list to get back at ricky, I noticed that it was edited when it was reprinted though. My copy said "tell him he's adopted" and my friend who had the same book had something else different and took out the paragraph about andrew being upset after karen told him he's adopted.

I haven't read this one in a while. I always liked guessing the classmates too!
