I think this might be my all-time favorite LS book. I read it all the time as a kid. I just adored everything about it, because I always got really excited about Halloween. I loved the scene where Karen, Ricky, Hannie, and Nancy are in class making decorations and talking about their costumes--it just reminds me of the way elementary school was. Pamela and her too cool for school friends, going as waitresses and flight attendants and punk rockers, ha. I loved how the whole Ben Brewer aspect of the book seemed super intriguing from Karen's POV. Kristy seemed genuinely scared when she and Karen went into Ben's room.
I also like when Karen and Nancy are discussing which scary story to tell at school, and Nancy's best try is (paraphrasing): "You know that charm bracelet I used to have? I lost it one day, and it turns out a leprechaun STOLE it...because I found it in my underwear drawer, and I NEVER keep it there." Hmm.

^ Now you have me excited to read this book. ;D I have it on my list to read on Halloween since I remembered how good it was. That's how I remember elementary school, too, booboo. I think one of the things I like about LS is it lets me re-live some of the good memories of elementary school (without all of the bad ;D)

Is this the book where Karen and Kristy go down into the old library and find that genelogy book (or whatever it was called) about everyone in their family? I remember trying to go on a search for my family's geneology book after reading that, thinking that our family (and all families everywhere) owned one too somewhere lol, but I never found anything like that.

I think I have to put this in my signature as soon as I get the energy to look up the exact quote. ;D

Don't remember if this is the book but I've searched for a genealogy book on my family too and not found anything. I've actually searched and searched and searched trying to do genealogy research on some of my family's lines with no success. It looks so easy in the books. ;D But I guess my family isn't descended from Old Ben Brewer. ;D

Haha, you must do that, wanderingfrog. The exchange is great. Nancy's all "Not scary enough?" and Karen just says "I don't think so." Yeah, they find the genealogy book in this one. That's one of the many reasons I think Watson's library is so distant. He has a record of his family's genealogy right there and I don't! Bullfrogs! Genealogy research has always fascinated me and I wish it was easier to look up stuff on my family like that.

This is one of my favorite LS books! I just re read it for Halloween. Did anybody get the trading cards in this book? I remember getting one for something called a gooooood sandwich.
I love the part where Karen and Kristy go up to Ben Brewer's room and did all that research. When I was a kid, even now I found it exciting.

I just read this one and think it might be one of my favorite LS books. It was actually almost kind of scary ;D and I loved the stuff about the costumes and Halloween party at school. Brought back lots of good memories, not to mention all of the good Ben Brewer stories. ;D Something I noticed was several references to Watson's dad being dead. I guess that explains why he doesn't show up in the series.

Pamela and her too cool for school friends, going as waitresses and flight attendants and punk rockers Oh, I totally forgot about that! Heehee. (I used to talk to someone online whose FOUR-YEAR-OLD was a punk rocker for Halloween. Still feel grown-up, Harding?)

^ ;D I was just watching a home video of Halloween when I was in 3rd grade and my best friend was dressed as a punk rocker - very "cool" ;D I thought of this book the other day when I asked my 11 year old cousin what her Halloween costume was and she said a "punk girl". I said "a punk rocker?" and she responded with "what's that? No, a punk skateboard girl." I had to laugh but feel pretty old. ;D

My best friend and I were twin punk rockers for Halloween when we were 12. We nearly suffocated ourselves from spraying our hair fuchsia in a very non-ventilated bathroom. Lol. I just remember it because it was like the one time I wasn't some sort of animal for Halloween.

Oh I remember the fumes from spraying my hair on Halloween! I sprayed my hair all the time for Halloween when I was in high school/middle school and it was hard to breath afterwards sometimes.

I loved the part where Karen's mom tells her and Andrew that Ben Brewer was a recluse and asks if they know what that means. Andrew replies "It means he wrecked things?" I thought that was so funny and also quite a believable thought for a kid to have.
