Is this the one where Karen freaks because she smells a cake baking in the middle of the night and thinks it's a b-day cake for Ben Brewer? That was funny.

It's been soooo long since I read this book, but I remember it being one of my fave LS books as a kid. I loved, Loved, LOVED, the whole Ben Brewer plotline, because I'm a sucker for ghost stories. I must reread this book, because I think I would still love it just as much as I did back then. At the end, not everything was explained, right? Like the diary, or whatever it was, ending up in Karen's room? I just really loved this book

I was thinking about the Ben Brewer story after reading about it in the Confusing Family Relationships thread, especially Greer saying that the part about Ben's friend drowning was really sad. I agree and the part about the ghost supposedly coming to Ben Brewer and telling him he had to throw a birthday party ever ten years was probably a guilt induced hallucination. I haven't read the book in awhile but, as I recall it, Ben fought with his best friend Edward Porter because he didn't invite Edward to his tenth birthday party (for whatever reason). Not long after, Edward drowned. Ben must have felt incredibly guilty for the way he treated his best friend and because he died before they could make up. The guilt may well have haunted him his whole life and, years later when he's gone a bit crazy, imagines Edward's ghost telling him to throw a birthday party ever ten years. He's convinced that his best friend is still angry at him about fifty years later for not inviting him to his birthday party and appearing to tell him how he is to be punished.
What does everyone else think of this idea? I know I may be overanalyzing it and the writer may not have intended this to be true. I still like to think that is how it happened because the ghost thing with the birthday party sounds really weird. It might be something a mentally ill old man wracked with guilt over a stupid childhood mistake might think though.

Porter? How interesting, given that Dawn's grandparents' name is Porter. I wonder if there's any relationship?

Isn't there somewhere else in the series where Porter is used, even besides Dawn's grandparents, or am I making that up?
