I was bumping threads with pets in them where I didn't like the choices, then thought I should bump this book as an example of a well-thought out pet, but there wasn't a thread for it! So, first about the pets. I wouldn't be crazy about having a wild bird in my house, and I'd make any (potential) kid wash her hands very well after handling it, but saving it was better than a graphic scene of it getting eaten by Rocky. I liked how the adults tried to tell her that it was a wild bird and couldn't stay, but she kept thinking it would stay because it loved her. I would have been the same kind of kid, nodding like I agreed with the grown-up but secretly knowing that my bird would love me forever. Emily Junior is a pet I've always had a soft spot for, because my brother had a rat when we were kids and I liked it a lot. Also, the adults involved thought carefully and told Karen what kind of limits she would have on any pet she chose, and made sure she knew what her responsibilities would be toward the pet of her choosing. I also liked the Emily (not junior) stuff in this book. I think the earlier books in the series were a bit better written overall, and everything Karen felt made sense, from jealousy to anger to love to protectiveness. Adjusting to a new younger sibling was probably especially hard for Karen, because here was another little girl who was going to live at Daddy's house all the time, when Karen (at this point) only got to see him every other weekend.

We had a pet rat for a couple of years. Seriously, my mother found him rummaging around in the garbage. Funny thing is? He was somebody's pet. That much was obvious, he was hte domesticated kind and lovedddd being around people. Only time he ever bit me was if I fed him something too small through the cage. He loved taking it from my fingers, but sometimes the food was just too small, the guy got me... (accident of course!). He also seemed ininhibited by our cats. He'd just look at them as if to say "you can't get me in here". I think sometimes he liked to tease them by climbing on the cage walls andthey KKNEW they couldn't get to him!. Ahh he was an awesome Rat (Rattus Rat was his name).
Anyway, I always loved this book when I was a child... loved reading about Karen and Emily's relationship. I guess in the Little Sister books you can see that she was really protective of her (as in when she tried to save her from being taken away when she thought that that could happen in whatever book I forgot it was...maybe karen's twin?)... in the regular BSC books it sometimes seemed as if Karen had some animosity towards Emily for being the youngest girl which is understandable, buti like reading about their relationships in the little sister books.

This is the book where Karen gets Emily Junior right? Or am I thinking of another book? Anyway, I liked this book tons . I liked the shirts that Kristy, Karen and Emily are wearing on the cover and I felt bad for Emily when she had to get ear tubes, although she was the same age as me when I got ear tubes so that was kind of cool .

^ I never remember this one being the one where Karen gets Emily Jr. but I love the name. ;D For some reason, the name and the whole idea of her being a pet rat makes me laugh. ;D I did love the thing about "Magic Tastee" the bird in this one. I haven't read it for a while. Now I guess I need to. I also felt for Emily with the tubes. Never had to get tubes but had ear infections all the time as a kid - no fun...

^ I feel bad for Emily with the ear tubes. How old was she in this book? 3?
I had to get ear tubes when I was five because I had so many ear infections I started losing a little hearing.

^ I think Emily was 2 1/2. Does she ever make it to 3 in the series or is she like poor Andrew who is always "almost 5"? ;D

I had two sets of tubes in my ears, the first when I was about eighteen months and the second set when I was almost four. (They can fall out). The second operation is one of my first complete memories; my parents got me a whole set of Rainbow Brite dolls and this little carrying case for them. And I still got at least one ear infection a year until I was eighteen. I don't seem to get them any more, but my ears are really sensitive when I get colds or any other kind of infection. I also had a speech impediment when I was little, which they think was probably complicated by the infections messing up my hearing, so I remember I liked that they mentioned that as a possibility. I love the illustrations of Emily in this book. She's just adorable. And I kind of love how you can tell that deep down, Lisa is kind of like, "ew, a rat?" but she goes along with it anyway. When I was born, my brother had a "I'm the big brother" t-shirt and my grandma had to wash it every night because he insisted on wearing it every day.

Lisa has never liked Emily Junior. I remember in Karen's Birthday when Karen is getting ready for her Big House weekend, Karen asks Lisa to make sure she plays with Emily Junior. Lisa pretty much says"Er....Seth will play with her." ;D I don't blame her. I'm not crazy on the idea of a rat for a pet either.

^ I definitely wouldn't want a rat as a pet. For some reason, though, "Emily Jr." makes me laugh. I don't really picture her as a rat but a small mouse. I forgot Lisa doesn't seem to like her. I know Elizabeth and Nannie don't seem to, either. But good ole Seth can play with her. ;D

I remember Nannie being really terrified of Emily Junior. In Karen's Mystery, she walked around the house with these big boots on and everyone was like, "Karen, we have to find Emily Junior so that Nannie can stop wearing those boots" lol ;D. And I love your new sig, Aln! It's so cute .

^ Thanks. ;D I thought the boots in Karen's Mystery were hilarious. I think Elizabeth was kind of scared of Emily, too, or at least didn't enjoy the idea of a loose rat.

I liked the shirts they wore on the front of the book - really cute It's been ages since I read this book, but from what I can remember, I really liked it This is the one where Karen feels angry at Emily first, but then at the end realizes that she's just a baby and must be really scared and then Karen shows her love for her? Cute story ^_^
