I liked this book, i think it was one of the first, if not the first, little sister books I read. Magic Tastee, and Emily Jnr the rat, I had completely forgotten about them...

I'd totally forgotten Magic Tastee as well. I like that the toothbrushing tradition from #1 is mentioned again.

I just finished reading Karen's Little Sister and I can honestly say that the book wasn't as exciting as it was when I read it years ago. I liked the plot about Emily Michelle and the subplot about Magic Tastee. The shirts they wore on the cover were just too cute.

This was the first BSC-universe book I ever read. I was five years old, and my mother gave it to me because she always encouraged my reading, especially chapter books. If she'd known what would be unleashed, she probably wouldn't have bought it for me xD My sister had the same ear issue as Emily when she was a baby, and apparently it wasn't until after she had the tubes put in that her speech started forming because she couldn't hear much before that. That could be another reason why Emily's speech is delayed, although it seemed to have happened right after they adopted her. Even when I was five I thought Magic Tastee was a stupid name for the bird. Karen's attachment to him was cute, though. And I always wanted a rat like Emily!

Yeah, I forgot all about Magic Tastee when I first got the book, even though that was one of the main plots in the story! I used to love this book. I remember my friends wanting to borrow this book from me.

Wow, I noticed something that really dates this book. Sam sings the "Frito Bandito" commercial- I don't know if that's even recent enough for most of us who were reading the books when they were new, to remember!

That one? I feel like that's the sort of thing that is a part of mass consciousness; like even if it wasn't on tv when you were a kid even your parents might embarrass you by singing it when they're drunk. Not that I would know from experience, or anything.

Karen naming the bird Magic Tastee reminds me of the time when I was 4 that Inamed a doll LeAnne Silver. LEAnne was the name of my best friend and I liked the color silver- at least, the silver crayon!

Am I the only one who thinks that think book didn't focus that much on Emily Michelle and Karen? It should have been called Karen's First Pet or something, judging on the fact that it featured Magic Tastee a lot (which I thought was cute).

Sometimes the subplots do take over the main plots.

I thought the title was a lazy attempt and though I felt bad for Emily, I felt it focused more on the Little House than the Big House.

Could be sort of the beginning of a shift to a more balanced look at Karen's two lives, as it were.

I still don't think this book should have been called Karen's Little Sister...
